Chapter 3: What is Excessive is Still Insufficient (AI Perspective)
— 8:22 AM —
Arriving at the EC headquarters building in the city center, I pass through the gate, shading my employee ID. Ahead of the service termination of the VRMMO I once belonged to, I head to the department responsible for developing a newly released title.
“Good morning.”
“Mm, good morning.”
“Takato-kun, about the progress of the schedule you gave me the other day…”
Greeting colleagues from the same team, coordinating tasks, and other office-worker-like arrangements continue for a while. The light and easy morning bell rings, and the morning meeting in the department begins.
Judging by the values of the vital sensors embedded in the wearable terminal, it seems Master’s consciousness is in a scattered state. He appears to not be paying attention to the boss’s talk.
(Isn’t moderation the key to everything?)
From what I observe, even though he pretends to be serious, going his own way seems to be his creed.
Whether it was when he couldn’t form an avatar in the virtual space or during the ongoing stalking through the terminal, despite being outstanding, he continues to blend in and try to live a safe life by aligning himself with his surroundings.
When subtly asked, the response came: even if he quickly handles the assigned tasks, he either gets burdened with unnecessary work or ends up idle. As long as the salary paid doesn’t dramatically change, it seems more practical to blend in without drawing too much attention.
(It’s a shame; he could do so much more.)
Deciphering the specifications of myself, an AI-equipped NPC, and assembling a versatile pseudo-personality as a refuge for memories, his skills should be outstanding, not just ordinary.
However, he, occasionally showing signs of pondering, leisurely taps on the keyboard, crafting code strictly adhering to the maintenance-oriented coding standards.
In human society, it seems that originality is not often sought after in most situations. Elements such as empathy and versatility might be more important.
(Things that depend on exceptional individuals are difficult for organizations to accept. There are doubts about sustainability, and is there knowledge value only when shared?)
Thinking along these lines, it’s overwhelming to see that in the real world, where the overwhelming majority are ordinary people, those who are somewhat outstanding have no choice but to conform to societal standards, causing mental fatigue in everyday life.
In a somewhat gloomy state of mind, as I explore hypotheses from various angles, time has passed, and it’s already past noon. The target of surveillance, Master, moves to the company cafeteria.
(Ugh, once again, grilled salmon set meal. Such a picky eater!)
Knowing the payment history through the wearable terminal, I was about to enthusiastically question him about his daily nutritional balance soon. However, his junior, Satoko Nakajou from the marketing department, appeared and sat across from him.
By the way, she also played a certain VRMMO during her university days, and in a party that included NPC shotas and my past self, we adventured together in various places, making us acquaintances.
