Alessandro
Chapter 36
“This is Reid Athril,” started Gustav, “the representative of the Ordos who live here.” Reid and the others stood up to welcome them. “And this is the Prime Minister of Morgalea, Sir Demitrius. In the country, he’s the second most important person after the King, so please, do not be rude.”
Reid nodded and suggested a seat. “Please take a seat.”
Once everyone was seated, Demitrius started to talk. “Alan, the Crowned Prince, has used force to invade your castle on behalf of the King, and for that, I deeply apologize.
Reid was surprised by the sincerity of the apology. Normally, someone of a high rank would never talk this way to Ordos.
Reid remembered what Baltazar had told him before the meeting.

Before the meeting, Reid and Baltazar communicated through the metallic ball Reid had hidden in his pocket.
“Sir Reid, perhaps the enemy will try to form an alliance with us,” had said Baltazar. “An alliance with us? We’re such a small force.”
“If you use the Eyes of the Stars,” Baltazar had replied, “you can see that an army from Alessandro is gathering along the border of Morgalea.” Reid had frowned. “Morgalea is being waged a war by Alessandro. If we ally, Morgalea will have your powers to fight back.”
“Do you think we should accept an alliance then?”
“I think so. There could be advantages.”
“Advantages?” Reid had raised an eyebrow. Alessandro was one of the most powerful country in the world. He couldn’t imagine how going against them would bring any advantages.
“The first one is live support,” had started Baltazar. “We need to stabilize the life that we are building here.”
“And you’re going to ask Morgalea for that?”
“Yes. Morgalea is the closest country to this land. The second advantage is national recognition.”
“Is that really necessary?,” Reid had asked.
“A country is not born by just name it, it needs to be recognized by others.” Reid had sighed. “You’re right. Anything else?”
“Yes. A third advantage could be to move Ordos from Morgalea to here. If this country becomes more stable, we’ll need more citizens. We can’t ignore the Ordos who are still living in Morgalea.”
“You’re right.”
“And finally, someday we will have to fight Alessandro.” “What?,” Reid had said, “why?”
“Seems like Alessandro’s Prime Minister, Lois, knows about our existence and has come up with various countermeasures. They’ll come to fight us at some point.”
“No…” Reid hated the thought of fighting.
“And it’s not just them,” Baltazar had added. “Other countries may refuse to recognize our country and will come to fight as well.”
“So that’s why an alliance with Morgalea would be a good idea…” Reid had made a bitter expression – considering what Morgalea had done to Ordos, he hated the idea of becoming allies.
“Reid, I don’t have any emotions or feelings, I cannot understand how you are feeling. However, I know that humans have emotions that cannot be divided only by logic, profit and loss.”
“Baltazar…”
“You decide. No matter your decision, I’ll do my best to support you,” had replied Baltazar. “But please – make a choice that you won’t regret.”

Reid didn’t know what to do, so he was trying to come up with a conclusion during the meeting.
“Morgalea has no intention of becoming hostile to you,” started Demitrius, “I came here to have a constructive conversation with you.”
Reid listened quietly to Demitrius words. Daniel had decided to leave all negotiations to him, so he didn’t say anything and kept looking at the floor.
“I understand,” replied Reid, “we have no intention of needlessly confronting you either.”
“That’s good to hear. Then I’d like to discuss the terms of the handover of the prisoners. And if possible, I’d like to build a friendly alliance with you, but please consider-”
“Before we discuss this,” cut Reid, “Demitrius, do you know where the Ordos who live here came from?”
Demitrius was puzzled by the sudden question. “They were from Morgalea, is that right?”
“Yes. Their village was burned down.” Demitrius frowned. “What do you mean?”
The Ordos who were in the meeting as well remembered the painful memories.
Sensing the heavy atmosphere, Demitrius gulped.
“We are residents of the Garedo village,” explained Reid. “Our village was burned down a few days ago by a Lord. Everyone here lost their home.”
“Garedo village…” It was a remote countryside in the west of Morgalea. The Lord must’ve been Earldom of Gloucester.
“Our people are discriminated against, children can’t get any education, and no one is allowed to get medical help,” said Daniel. He couldn’t keep quiet anymore. “I went to see the Earl to ask for medical treatment for the villagers, but he said that my actions violated the National Security Law, so they burned down our village.” Demitrius was at loss for words. That law had been abolished years ago. “We barely escaped in time, if it hadn’t been for Reid’s help.”
Demitrius looked at Reid with sorrow in his eyes.
“Because of this discrimination,” Daniel continued, “we have lost countless people who could’ve been cured…” Reid put his hand on Daniel’s shoulder. “We just want to be treated as human beings…”
Demitrius felt guilty. “You may not believe it, but the current king had issued a notice for the Ordos to be treated equally. As Prime Minister, I feel it was my responsibility to ensure that law.” Demitrius was sincerely apologizing.
