Calix patiently awaited her response without pressuring her. Finally, Asella’s lips parted.
“I won’t ask for anything else. Just my younger sister…”
The words that flowed from her trembling lips didn’t make a lot of sense. However, without Calix poking through that delicate spot, Asella grasped his arm without hesitation.
He paused, momentarily taken aback. This was the first time his wife had approached him so assertively.
“I’ll be fine, so please save Mariel, at least. Your Excellency, if you put in a little effort, it’s not an impossible task. I beg you…”
Her plea was desperate to the point of despair. Her words mixed with tears, making her speech crumple, but Calix understood immediately.
‘Asella doesn’t know yet. that Mariel Chartus has become Mariel Loctrin.’
He intentionally didn’t mention it. That way Asella had to lean on him even a little bit to save her sister, which she was doing right now.
Sending the news through Margo was also part of this plan. He wanted to give her enough time to think.
He believed Asella would come to this realization after contemplating it— that the only person who could save her sister was her husband.
However, it seemed that her thoughts had gone far beyond that. It was evident that upon hearing the news of Calix personally annihilating her own family, she believed not only her sister but also herself would be disposed of.
Asella’s words, where she poured out her painful innermost feelings, were ultimately spoken with the belief that she would soon die. Even though it wasn’t a pleasant misunderstanding, it allowed him to have a glimpse into her heart.
Calix shifted his gaze from the delicate hand that was holding his arm to Asella’s tear-stained face. Her expression was filled with desperation. He hadn’t intended to push her this far. His heart ached, and simultaneously, a strange emotion arose within him.
It was a feeling he had occasionally felt around Asella, one he had never experienced with anyone else.
“If you save only Mariel, I’ll do anything you ask, Your Excellency.”
“There’s no need for that.”
Calix gently brushed Asella’s disheveled hair behind her ear, touching her cheek lightly.
“Nothing will happen to you or your sister.”
“…”
“So please stop crying.”
Calix reached out his hand to her. At first, Asella blinked, not understanding his intention. He patiently waited until she fully grasped the meaning behind his actions.
In truth, when Calix came into possession of the letter Asella intended to send to Philip, he couldn’t contain his anger. He vowed to make sure he would never let her escape from him.
He even considered resorting to despicable tactics, such as using the life of Mariel Loctrin as leverage and using manipulative methods to persuade her.
However, as soon as he came face to face with her, his heart wavered and faltered. Just like it had now.
“Come here.”
Asella hesitated. For a moment, she remained standing still without a word. Then, she hesitantly approached him as if she had made a decision in her heart and fell into his arms.
Calix pulled his wife into his embrace as if he had been waiting for her all this time.
