‘War can be quite rewarding, especially when there is value in the spoils.’
A statement that implied she was sold like a commodity and she should obediently stay quiet like a doll.
A statement that comes from a base intention to clearly imprint her situation from the beginning so that she wouldn’t dare to speak out.
‘Is that what she’s been thinking about all this time?’
A faint ripple spread through his mind.
Looking back, it was a ridiculous statement. She wasn’t a doll. She was his wife, a human being. No person could hear such words and remain unaffected, and she couldn’t forget them either.
She had merely buried them deep within her heart and deliberately turned a blind eye.
‘Would you like to meet up with Lady Chartus separately, Your Highness?’
‘It’s unnecessary.’
What did Asella think of him when he hadn’t even bothered to come to see her after he sent a marriage proposal?
‘If you want it so badly, We can make one right away.’
‘Have you forgotten your duty?’
‘Whether you like it or not, it’s my decision.’
The words he’d spoken to her, the slightest touch of his body sending shivers down her spine.
What must it have been like for his wife to accept all of that when she was not allowed to resist?
Asella’s expression of being “sold” was a condensed expression of countless emotions.
“…”
Calix, who had been quietly observing his wife’s face, unknowingly reached out and gently cupped her delicate cheek. Tears streamed down her eyelids and soaked his palm.
“Asella.”
A flicker of warmth appeared in his emotionless gaze.
He thought it might be okay to say something more tender. There was no need to forcefully make up anything—just the truth, plain and simple. But it was a little awkward to say out loud.
“You are my wife.”
Asella’s eyelashes fluttered. Calix added again.
“No matter what happens, that won’t change.”
Then, he quietly waited. After what seemed like an eternity, her closed eyelids slowly opened, revealing Ashella’s watery eyes.
“Do you really… think that way?”
Her teary eyes shimmered. It was a fleeting moment, but something prickled in Calix’s heart. He answered with a sense of suffocation as if someone had stuffed cotton into his throat.
“Yes.”
“Then…”
Asella’s eyes swirled restlessly. It was obvious that she had something to say, but her hesitation prevented her from speaking openly.
Calix patiently awaited her response without pressuring her. Finally, Asella’s lips parted.
