Asella swallowed back her tears. She raised her head and stared directly at Calix.
“No, I am Chartus.”
Perhaps it was because she had reached the point where she couldn’t avoid death. Asella fearlessly spoke the words that she would never have uttered under normal circumstances.
“I have never once thought of myself as a Benvito.”
Calix’s face stiffened in an instant.
“Your Excellency has never considered me your wife either.”
“…What?”
“I’m just an obedient doll who listens well, a tool to provide a successor, a suitable woman to fill the position of the Grand Duchess.”
One by one, Asella’s words dripped with misery.
“A defective product that was sold for an unworthy price.”
“Asella Benvito.”
His voice was low and it seemed to hold an invisible warning as he called her name. Asella, who had kept her mouth shut, silently stared at the distorted face of the man.
‘He has always frightened me.’
She had been afraid of him. There had never been a moment when she wasn’t afraid. His cold and distant gaze, his emotionless face that couldn’t be read, the power and influence he possessed, everything frightened her.
She would momentarily feel okay, but then fear would grip her even more whenever she thought that he could crush her with that power at any time.
‘But now, it’s all over.’
Thinking that everything had come to an end, her heart felt at ease. The emotions that had let go of the hope she had held onto with great effort were closer to tranquility.
But for some reason, she was reminded of the moment she first met him.
The fierce, merciless red eyes that scanned her like prey. The inconsiderate actions and the cruel words that spilled from his mouth… From the depths of her memories, past events emerged one by one.
Until then, she had thought it was nothing. But now, why?
‘Ah.’
Asella realized the fact that she had been hurt. Despite appearing fine on the surface, it was a festering wound from within. Just like an untreated and neglected wound swells to its limit before bursting, the human heart is no different.
Amidst the overwhelming pain and fear, she was oblivious to the fact that the wound, which was already open, was being reopened in a brutal manner.
Asella tightly closed her eyes. The long-contained sorrow surged up as if it would be unbearable unless she did so. However, tears still managed to roll down her cheeks.
“Me too.”
Now that she had laid everything down, she felt she could be more honest than ever before.
“I know well what position I am in here.”
“Stop.”
On the other hand, Calix was bewildered by Asella’s words. Although he maintained a cold and expressionless face outwardly, his inner thoughts were far from that.
In truth, every word she said was accurate. After all, he had chosen her and married her for that reason.
But when he heard those words from Asella’s mouth, it felt as if all his shortcomings were being exposed.
“And what am I to you?”
“I said stop.”
However, Calix couldn’t prevent Asella from opening her lips once again.
“…Your spoils.”
His heart sank. He recalled something he had said in the past. It was their wedding day. He had taunted her, threatening her as she trembled with nervousness.
‘War can be quite rewarding, especially when there is value in the spoils.’
