The scenes from the dream were still vividly lingering in her mind. It felt like a reality rather than a dream.
‘Chartus…’
The attack had taken place at the break of dawn. The assault was swift and precise. The knights of the Marquis’s family, who were defenseless, had little chance to respond adequately. Merciless slaughter ensued.
The flames devoured the mansion like a blaze, the chilling sound of metal as swords clashed, the desperate screams and pleas of people trying to escape, the trails of blood turning the serene morning sky into a crimson canvas, the piercing screams that tore through the ears.
In an instant, the mansion where she had lived for more than half of her life, the place where her childhood memories with her mother were etched, and the proud lineage of her family, all crumbled to dust.
‘Why…?’
He was there at the scene of that one-sided massacre. Calix Benvito, her husband.
He wielded his sword mercilessly, his expression devoid of any emotion. With each swing of the sword, the sharpened blade produced a gruesome sound, accompanied by the gush of someone’s blood.
The screams that tore through the cold morning air still echoed in her ears.
“Gulp!”
Asella’s throat tightened. She leaned forward, clutching her upper body, and began to vomit continuously. It felt as if hot oil had been poured over her head, causing a throbbing headache and a chilling sensation that drenched her body in cold sweat.
When she finally managed to stop dry heaving.
The dreams she had been having continued to unfold. The scattered puzzle pieces came together, forming a complete picture.
‘Do you know what that symbol means?’
In her dream, she accidentally discovered the secret of Karma, and Calix Benvito noticed that fact.
‘You don’t have Adele’s abilities, so I even considered sparing your life, unlike hers..’
For some reason, the man who initially intended to spare her changed his mind and attacked the Chartus family, annihilating everyone. Then, he asked her for a divorce.
‘If only you had signed the divorce papers peacefully when I was asking nicely…’
In that situation, being asked to sign was akin to a death sentence. It would be too easy to kill her once her connection to the Benvito family was severed.
In order to protect Mariel, in her dream, she had no choice but to refuse the divorce.
And then, he ruthlessly poisoned her.
‘You must have figured out who killed Adele, right?’
‘The Chartus bloodline must be completely eliminated.’
Mariel, too, would have met a similar end. He would have ended up taking their lives, just as he had killed their mother.
It was a dreadful ending.
“No… This can’t be…”
Asella muttered in a voice that sounded hoarse, like someone who hadn’t spoken in days.
“What am I supposed to do now…”
She curled into a tight ball, wrapping her arms around her shivering body while the damp clothes, soaked in cold sweat, clung to her body. Her heart pounded frantically, making its presence known.
This was going to be a long and endless night.
