“What did you just say?”
His face hardened in an instant. The dryness in his voice was mixed with a sharpness akin to a dagger. Emitting a chilly aura, he asked, “Say it again.”
Asella’s face showed bewilderment. Calix was now on the verge of a bitter laugh. His wife truly believed that absurd thought to be real. She hesitated and then opened her mouth.
“If… If you have a child… Is that why you’re acting like this?”
“……”
“I was trying to assure you that it’s okay.”
He was enraged. In that small head of hers, he had already become a shameless man who wanted to welcome a mistress and a child.
“I will sign the consent form.”
“What?”
So, in another words, she thought all his kindness was just a means to silence her for bringing in an illegitimate child. Calix no longer felt the need to control his expression. His crumpled face spoke for his emotions.
“And if you want a divorce later, feel free to…”
“Divorce?”
Calix couldn’t hold back and stood up abruptly. Asella flinched in surprise, but there was no turning back. With brisk steps, he stood in front of her in a blink of an eye.
“Now.”
Calix gritted his teeth. The moment he heard the word “divorce,” his rationality evaporated.
“You said you want a divorce from me?”
The air around them froze in an instant.
Asella sealed her lips in the unsettling atmosphere. His reaction was quite different from what she had expected.
‘This person… is angry with me.’
She deliberately brought up the topic. She believed that if she proposed something he wanted first, it would be beneficial for herself and Mariel. She thought it might buy them a little more time to escape. She never dreamt that the atmosphere would become so ominous.
“Why?”
As Asella searched for the reason, Philip’s words from her memory echoed in her ears.
“Don’t act arrogantly towards the grand duke. Men of that status cannot tolerate anything that challenges their ego. Bow your head and obey whenever he commands. Your opinion doesn’t matter.”
It was the lecture she received when she was dragged away and beaten by Philip for meeting her sister without permission, just before the wedding.
‘Maybe because I brought the word divorce first?’
Perhaps she had unknowingly angered him by mentioning divorce first.
‘It might have hurt his pride.’
If they were to divorce, it would be him, not her, who should be the one to initiate it. Asella quickly tried to rectify her words.
“Of course, the blame should be on me…”
“You.”
Calix’s eyes ignited like fiery sparks. Every word he uttered carried a powerful force.
“To you, Do I look like trash who would marry another woman while having a mistress and a child on the side?”
Calix spoke through gritted teeth, his intimidating presence causing the air around them to tremble. Instinctively, Asella cowered and sat back, her body recoiling. The sound of the chair being dragged on the smooth floor was unusually loud.
“Wasn’t that the reason?”
Her mind turned as blank as a blank sheet of paper, realizing the enormity of her mistake.
Calix tightly gripped the armrests of the chair on which she sat. It was a strong grip that seemed capable of breaking the armrests at any moment. Leaning towards Asella, he asked harshly.
“I ask you again. Do you want a divorce from me?”
It was a grave error on Asella’s part that she didn’t immediately deny it. Despite her attempts to conceal her true feelings, she ended up revealing her inner turmoil in her confusion.
“Ha, that’s what you wanted.”
Calix’s blood ran cold at the blatant display of his wife’s sincerity. His red eyes gleamed with a chilly intensity.
A terrifying silence ensued. An icy stillness hung in the air.
After a while, Calix twisted his lips into a cruel and dangerous smile. It was a menacing smile that sent shivers down one’s spine. His voice was low and laced with a chilling warning as he spoke.
“There is no divorce in the Benvito family.”
“I… I…”
“Don’t you dare speak such words again.”
Her face turned pale, and her slender body began to tremble uncontrollably.
