‘You’ve barely had a sip. Drink more.’
The vivid crimson hue reminded her of the poisoned wine. It also bore a resemblance to the color of the blood clot that she had once vomited onto her palm.
A terrible pain that seemed to burn through her entire body. Her vision flickered uncontrollably. Her heartbeat, although faint, was slowing down.
And then, death.
She gasped for air. It felt like a land creature tossed into the water, struggling to stay afloat, sinking deeper into the abyss.
“Your Highness, here’s a new knife.”
The servant promptly brought a fresh utensil. Asella held the knife again, struggling. However, the sight of the red blood on the plate kept reminding her of the horrors from her dreams. Just looking at it made her nauseous and dizzy.
“Don’t you like the food?”
Calix, who had paused his own meal, now gazed at her. Asella’s parched lips trembled slightly.
“No, it is not that.”
Even after hearing her response, he remained unfazed. His gaze seemed to be searching for something. Asella reluctantly brought a few peas from the edge of the plate to her mouth. Fighting back a wave of nausea, she managed to force them down her throat.
However, her effort fell short of deceiving Calix’s keen eyes.
“Then why aren’t you eating?”
His sharp gaze swept over her face, her trembling fingertips, and the barely touched food, like a predator examining its prey. Then, he stared at her again.
Asella remained silent, despite the demanding look in his eyes. She couldn’t utter a word. The suffocating silence descended upon the table.
Finally, it was Calix who broke the silence.
“Ryzen.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
His red eyes had turned chillingly cold.
“Didn’t I specifically instruct you to pay extra attention to the meal?”
“That is what you commanded.”
“Then explain to me why my wife can’t even put food in her mouth.”
“I apologize.”
“Is there a need to keep alive things that cannot even satisfy the taste buds of their owners?”
The atmosphere instantly sank.
The servants present froze in their places, unable to make a move. It was an instinctive response, knowing that one wrong move could cost them their lives. Their master’s words were not just empty threats.
“I will have them held accountable.”
A shiver ran through their bodies at the chilling command that foreshadowed a storm of blood. Ryzen, too, silently swallowed his words, realizing that the moment he feared had finally arrived.
“Bring them out, every last one of them.”
“Your Grace, just a moment…”
