- Misunderstanding
As Asella was about to step down from the carriage, she paused. It was because her servants were waiting for her outside the door, and among them was Ryzen.
“Your Highness, His Excellency is waiting for you.”
Asella’s face turned pale. Her gaze shifted towards the main entrance of the mansion. At the end of a straight path extended before her, the central doors swung open, revealing a dazzling interior decoration that was almost blinding. However, to Asella, it felt nothing more than the gap leading to a demon.
She forced her tightly pressed lips open and spoke.
“I need to stop by my room for a moment. I just returned and need some time to prepare.”
“Of course, Your Highness.”
“Mariel is asleep in the carriage.”
Watching her younger sister being embraced by the arms of the maid, Asella turned and headed towards her chambers. She couldn’t keep the Grand Duke waiting for long. She quickly freshened up, wore some light makeup, and put on a simple indoor dress before stepping out of her chamber.
“I’ll escort you there, Your Highness.”
As Asella walked, guided by Ryzen, she struggled to suppress the rising anxiety. Even though it was just a dream, she was about to meet the man who had attempted to take her life moments ago. She tightened her grip on the hem of her dress, her hand tensing with nervous anticipation.
As she walked along the wide corridor, Asella suddenly realized something and came to a halt. When her footsteps ceased, Ryzen turned back.
“Your Highness?”
“Weren’t we heading to His Grace’s office?”
Although the Grand Duke used a separate building from the mansion, Asella had been to his office a few times before, so she had a rough idea of its location. However, the corridor she was currently walking along was a path she had never taken before.
Ryzen’s expression turned slightly apologetic, and he explained, “I apologize, Your Highness. My explanation was inadequate. The place you are heading to right now is the dining hall. Did you perhaps have dinner?”
Of course, Ryzen knew that Asella didn’t have dinner yet, but he asked anyway. Asella’s watery eyes, as she shook her head, flickered with unease.
“No, but why would…”
Before she could finish her sentence, a voice came from behind her.
“Does a married couple need a reason to have dinner together?”
Asella was taken aback by the low voice that echoed in the space. She tightly clenched her trembling fingers into her palm and slowly turned around.
Calix, dressed in a white shirt, was walking towards her.
