Roshan continued, “Too well, actually, I’ve been friends with Adele long before she became a marquise.”
“I didn’t know. I’ve never heard of my mother having a close friend.”
“You must have heard it once or twice.”
“What?” Asella couldn’t hide her perplexed expression at Roshan’s matter-of-factly tone.
“We used to meet often. Do you still enjoy riding horses? Whenever Adele offered a ride, you would eagerly come running, even if you were playing with something else. And in the summer, you used to easily devour a large parfait with lots of whipped cream.”
Asella was genuinely taken aback. Her blue eyes began to flicker intensely.
“B-But I don’t remember any of that!”
“Maybe because it happened when you were really young, it happens…”
Roshan’s words trailed off, but they only faintly reached Asella’s ears. An inexplicable doubt filled her mind.
‘How could I forget something so important?’
According to what she heard, there seemed to have been considerable interaction between Roshan, her mother, and herself. Yet, she couldn’t recall anything, which felt strangely off.
It was as if someone had tampered with her memory.
Asella quietly swallowed her breath.
‘Something feels strange.’
Roshan had a friendly smile, but Asella couldn’t help but wonder if there were hidden motives behind it. It could have been a ploy to make her lower her defenses, using the bond with her mother as a weapon.
‘I’ll have to be careful.’
She held back any slip of the tongue. With her plans to escape from the Duke, even the smallest vulnerability could be fatal. She realized that she couldn’t stay with Roshan any longer.
Suddenly, Mariel placed her hand on top of Asella’s hand and whispered softly.
“Sister, it’s not like that.”
Then, she pushed a piece of freshly baked pastry towards her and cheerfully exclaimed.
“Try it! It’s incredibly delicious.”
“Mariel?”
“Let’s have just this and go, okay? I’m sure you’ll like the taste, too.”
Suddenly, a beep sound came from somewhere. Roshan rummaged through her jacket pocket and pulled out a pocket watch.
Her expression darkened as she opened the lid and checked the message inside. She swiftly tucked the watch back into her pocket with a slightly rough motion and spoke.
“Your Highness, I’m sorry, but I have another appointment. May I leave first?”
Her face appeared urgent, and her voice was filled with tension. Asella’s eyes held a moment of doubt, but she nodded shortly after.
“I didn’t realize you were busy all this time, and I’ve kept you here until now.”
“No, it’s fine. I enjoyed our conversation. I hope we can meet again if the opportunity arises.”
After bidding farewell, Roshan turned around and winked at Mariel. Mariel responded with a wink and mouthed the words.
‘Don’t worry about my sister.’
Roshan nodded her head. At this moment, she had no choice but to trust this young lady.
‘It might be better to remain under the protection of the Grand Duke until she fully awakens.’
If the golden currents that Mariel had seen through her abilities were true, and if Calix Benvito truly had feelings for Asella in his heart.
That man would become the perfect shield anyone could ask for for the two sisters.
After she left, Roshan walked through the crowd, pushing through the people. She could sense a few figures following closely behind her.
‘They must be the guards sent by the Grand Duke, trying to figure out my identity.’
It seems that the Grand Duke has assigned some of his people to monitor the two, and it shouldn’t be a surprise to have them trying to find out whom Asella had met on her outing.
Roshan swiftly turned into a deserted alley, casting an invisibility spell. Her figure vanished in an instant. When they came walking through the winding alley after a few minutes, there was no one around.
Her gestures casting the teleportation spell seemed urgent.
‘The enemy’s movements are suspicious.’
Until now, they had been operating secretly, hiding in the shadows. But now, it seemed like they had no intention of doing so. With the signal that danger was approaching, Roshan bit her lip.
The message from earlier continued to unsettle her mind.
