The servants, seeing Mariel pretending to be asleep, began to talk amongst themselves.
“See? I told you she would be sleeping.”
“Sorry. She was begging so much earlier, asking me to take her to see her sister. I thought she might sneak to see her when no one is watching.”
“Well, let’s say she did and went to her sister. Do you think His Lordship will remain quiet?”
Mariel flinched. She squirmed slightly under the blanket. They were talking about Asella.
‘Oh, speaking of which, what happened yesterday?’
‘I heard that His Lordship was really furious, and it looks like he did a good job of educating her.’
‘They said he had to change the whip halfway through.’
Mariel’s mind went blank. She knew to some extent what Philip was doing to her sister. But that was just the tip of the iceberg.
‘What has been happening to her all this time?’
Even in the midst of struggling to regain her composure from the shock, the voices of the servants pierced through her like daggers.
‘It’s both funny and sad at the same time, you know, how she’s doing this thinking she’s saving her younger sister. It’s just not right.’
‘What’s not right? She’s lucky to be born into nobility and live more comfortably than others.’
‘But she gets beaten up every day in return.’
Mariel clenched her teeth tightly. Her fist, hidden under the blanket, trembled.
‘And yet she pretends to be all classy and noble. It’s laughable.’
‘Remember when the other maids said they would dress her up, and even if they pricked her with needles, she didn’t make a sound?’
Mariel’s complexion turned pale. Muffled screams erupted in her mouth.
She wanted to ask. What did her sister do so wrong? Why did they commit such horrible acts to her?
‘But if you think about it, aren’t other noble young ladies and young lords like that?’
‘When you strip away their glamorous clothes, they may be covered in scars.’
Hehehe. At the end of the vile conversation, malicious laughter erupted. Mariel wanted to cover her ears.
‘His Grace might find her unsightly and break off the engagement.’
‘I hope so. Does she think she even deserves to be the Grand Duchess?’
‘But I heard they called in a priest, didn’t they?’
Despite being just voices, the palpable hostility and malice couldn’t be concealed. Asella was surrounded by enemies from all sides. Mariel’s mind became hazy just imagining the hardships her sister had endured all these years.
‘It would be amusing to see her humiliated by a broken engagement.’
‘To be honest, I’d rather see her get divorced than have a broken engagement. I want her to be completely shattered.’
‘If that happens, she’ll never be able to dream of a proper marriage again.’
‘She’ll probably be sent to some kind of convent and never be allowed to leave until her death.’
