The maids sealed their lips and stared at each other in silence like honey bees. Following their gaze, Asella spotted Margo.
“Madam, I trust you had a comfortable journey.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
Margo returned to the duchy after a while of being away to tend to some things as per Calix’s orders. Margo took a blanket from one of the maids at the entrance and draped it securely over Asella’s shoulders, saying,
“The morning air is still chilly, Your Highness. Make sure to stay warm.”
“Thank you.”
“It’s my pleasure.”
Rising to her feet, Margo glanced at the maids with a stern gaze, scanning their faces, and spoke in a calm and low voice.
“There is no talk that you can’t say in front of Her Highness.”
Until just a moment ago, the maids had been teasing and laughing, but now their faces showed a sense of defeat. Asella, who had been observing, intervened and stopped Margo.
“Don’t be too harsh on them, madam. They were just trying to lighten the mood because I was disappointed about not being able to go to the study and made a simple mistake.”
Margo was about to say something but then closed her mouth and let out a quiet sigh.
‘The atmosphere seems to be loosening up these days. I need to take this opportunity to have them disciplined properly.’
This time, the mistress didn’t make it an issue, so Margo could let it slide. However, luck wouldn’t always be on their side. The most important thing to be cautious of in the ducal residence was nothing other than being careful with their words. If they continued to make slip-ups like this, it was only a matter of time before it reached the Grand Duke’s ears.
‘If His Grace finds out, there will be no escaping punishment.’
Being careless with their words in front of their mistress could be considered an act of deceit against their master.
Margo was certain that if the Grand Duke were to learn of this, they would face merciless punishment. There was even a possibility that the anger could extend to their entire family to make an example of them. The Grand Duke was not a lenient master by any means.
‘He’s even less likely to be forgiving if it’s a matter related to Her Highness.’
She had heard from Ryzen privately that the Duke was showing interest in his wife. Whether it was fondness, concern, curiosity, or interest, it was certainly not something to be taken lightly.
‘Moreover, he has been frequently visiting Her Highness’s bedchamber.’
The Grand Duke would come during the late hours of the night and leave only when dawn approached. However, it didn’t seem like anything special was happening inside the room. The bedding was always neat, and there were no traces of intimacy on the Duchess’s body.
Above all, it seemed as if the mistress herself was unaware that her husband had visited her bedchamber.
“By the way, Madam…”
