Asella gasped for air as she awoke from her dream. Her chest, covered by the bedding, rose and fell rapidly as if she were out of breath.
‘Why was I having such a dream…’
She sat up with a pale complexion. Her feet touched the rug that spread around the bed. Staggering with unsteady steps, she made her way to the vanity. There, she reached out for the pendant she had hidden deep inside a drawer.
Pressing firmly with her index finger on the sealed part, a clicking sound resonated as the lid twisted and opened like a cap. From within, a small button rolled onto her pale, quivering palm.
It was the puzzle that Asella had been unable to solve regarding her mother’s death. Who did this button belong to and what did the pattern signify? Then, last night, that pattern appeared in her dream.
Asella’s lips parted, and a voice that seemed on the verge of fading away emerged like a flickering light.
“…Karma.”
The Lord of the Abyss, Karma. The ruler of the underworld.
If the Emperor ruled the empire on the surface, the leader of Karma dominated the world in the depths of darkness.
However, considering its name and influence, there was little known about Karma’s head.
No one knew who the leader of Karma was, who the members of the organization were, or how many there were. Despite numerous stories circulating in society, they were merely superficial.
The colleague laughing and chatting next to you or the neighbor could be a member of Karma. The imperial citizens feared them because they had a tangible existence but other than that, nothing was known about them.
‘If Calix Benevito is the leader of Karma…’
Everything fell into place perfectly.
‘He would be the one who sent Karma to assassinate my mother…’
Perhaps her mother had already known the pattern of Karma. That’s why, before she took her last breath, her last words were to be wary of Calix Benvito.
Strength surged into the trembling hand clutching the button.
Was it just a delusion created by her own fears?
However, it was such a vivid dream. Scenes that seemed to be right in front of her eyes, sensations that felt so real. It was so close to reality that it went beyond being just a dream.
‘It feels almost like a hallucination.’
A strangely eerie feeling washed over her. She couldn’t help but sense a chilling coldness. Asella wrapped her arms around her trembling body and looked out the window before the break of dawn.
‘As soon as dawn breaks, I must go to the study.’
She needed to find out why she had such a dream. Where did this inexplicable and strange sensation originate from?
She had to find out for herself.
