The Grand Duchess Escape - Chapter 115.2
A map was a piece that held valuable information and was strictly guarded by any family. It was a piece of information that could become a vulnerability if exposed to enemies, so accessing it was no easy task.
“Such a cute thing to do.”
Calix recalled the image of the frozen woman as soon as she saw him. Despite her attempts to act nonchalant, she couldn’t deceive his eyes.
His animalistic senses were sharp enough to detect his wife’s presence from the deepest recesses of the study as soon as she entered.
“You can’t deceive me with those eyes.”
On the other hand, her blue irises were honest. Her eyes fluttered vigorously, unable to decide what she was going to say next.
‘I was informed that Her Highness wishes to read a book. Shall I prepare the Grand Duchess’s study?’
‘No, let her use my study.’
‘Pardon?’
The Grand Duke’s study was a restricted area, accessible only to Calix himself. Even Ryzen couldn’t set foot in it without his permission.
That was why it surprised everyone when Calix granted Asella access to his study.
‘The Grand Duchess’s study has been closed for nearly twenty years, so it will take time to make it usable.’
It was a seemingly plausible statement, but that did not explain all of his shocking behavior.
“I have no talent for lying either.”
Calix looked down at his palm in contemplation. Asella’s dropped handkerchief lay atop it.
The image of her pale face, frozen with a tinge of blue from fear of being caught, came to mind. The knuckles of her hands holding the book he returned to her had turned ghostly white.
At this point, he couldn’t discern exactly what she was up to. He could only speculate a few possibilities.
With an expressionless face that revealed no emotions, Calix lowered his voice and uttered his wife’s name.
“Asella Benvito.”
Whether it was due to the Grand Duchess’s study not being ready or to keep an eye on her…
There could have been plenty of plausible excuses, but the truth was that Calix had a separate reason for granting Asella access to his study.
A faint sense of guilt resurfaced every time he saw his wife, whom he had hurt.
And a slight excitement derived from the fact that she wanted something from him.
“What mischievous plan is she concocting with that small head of hers?”
As Calix emerged from the study, Ryzen, who had been waiting outside the door, quietly approached him from behind.
“Assign someone to her.”
He gave a brief command without even glancing at his aide. There was a strange obsession in his chilly voice.
“Report to me without fail on what she does, when, and where.”
“Yes, Your Excellency,”
Deep within him, a subtle sense of discomfort caused Calix to clench his fist.
Those emotions, too faint to even be noticed, were undoubtedly there: betrayal.
