- Chapter 5 - The Immortal Emperor’s Former Residence, Underlying Tensions Arise!
Yan Changkong walked carefully ahead, followed by hundreds of people selected from various factions to experience the Emperor’s path of cultivation up close.
None of them used spells or flew through the air.
They walked up the mountain.
Before long, they passed through an ancient gate, where the Great Elder stood with a group of disciples on either side.
“Welcome, esteemed guests, to my sect for guidance!”
Yan Changkong sighed in relief, thinking that this old fellow finally did something worthwhile.
The place where the outer disciples lived was not far from the mountain gate.
Soon, the group arrived in a small valley scattered with simple wooden cabins.
The valley itself was ordinary in scenery but blessed with tranquility.
Near the riverbank, there was a wooden cabin surrounded by a fence, with a stone tablet standing in front of it.
The words “Immortal Emperor’s Former Residence” were prominently carved on the stone tablet.
This immediately caught everyone’s attention.
Yan Changkong turned around and cheerfully introduced, “Everyone, please look! This wooden cabin is the Emperor’s former residence.”
“Years ago, the Emperor lived in this humble cabin.”
As he spoke, he felt emotional, saying, “Standing here, I can almost feel that indomitable spirit and unwavering will!”
Liu Piao raised an eyebrow but said nothing, thinking that thousands of years had passed; what spirit could possibly remain?
However, in this situation, it was certainly not appropriate to contradict him.
Next, the people from various factions took turns entering the Emperor’s former residence, as if on an outing, closely experiencing traces of the Emperor’s life.
Then, under Yan Changkong’s guidance, everyone visited the Emperor’s bathing pool, the Emperor’s toilet, and the stone where he used to meditate…
They even touched the ancient tree the Emperor had once climbed.
Yan Changkong generously took out the cultivation techniques and spells the Emperor had practiced to show everyone.
After all, they weren’t worth much.
For those present, these techniques and spells were naturally trivial.
In other circumstances, they wouldn’t even bother to look at them. But today, they practiced with extraordinary seriousness, determined to memorize all the techniques.
Surely, the techniques practiced by the Emperor must have some exceptional qualities, right?
This continued until evening.
Liu Piao glanced at the sky, noticing it was getting late, and cupped her hands towards Yan Changkong, saying:
“It’s getting late; we should head down the mountain now!”
“Thank you once again, Sect Master Yan, for your warm hospitality today and for allowing us to experience the Immortal Emperor’s path of cultivation up close. It has been incredibly beneficial!”
Although many others did not agree with her words, they still cupped their hands and expressed their thanks.
Jiang Youlong snorted lightly, turned, and began to leave the mountain.
Before long, the disciples from the Holy Lands, ancient clans, and immortal dynasties dispersed, and the Profound Azure Sect became quiet once more.
“Finally, we’ve sent those troublemakers away!”
The Great Elder, Chen Xiu, sighed heavily in relief and remarked, “This hurdle has been crossed, I suppose?”
Yan Changkong, however, shook his head with a grim expression, “It’s not that simple. Just wait; tonight will be the real spectacle.”
The Great Elder’s tone turned serious: “Sect Master, are you saying they didn’t make a move today but will strike tonight?”
“Exactly!”
Yan Changkong’s face darkened, and his eyes flickered with intensity. After a moment, he solemnly instructed:
“Tonight, the sect is on lockdown!”
“All disciples, including you, are to remain confined. No one is allowed to go out, regardless of what they see or hear!”
Chen Xiu’s expression turned stern: “Sect Master, what about you…”
Yan Changkong took a deep breath: “This is a calamity for our sect, but also an opportunity for us to rise!”
“As the Sect Master, I must shoulder this responsibility!”
He looked deeply at Chen Xiu and added, “If I die tomorrow, you will take over as Sect Master, then disband the disciples and dissolve the sect.”
“Don’t let everyone sacrifice for nothing.”
Chen Xiu was moved, opening his mouth to speak but was interrupted.
“No need to say more!”
Yan Changkong’s tone was resolute: “Go relay the orders. I will be in the Meditation Hall tonight, awaiting their arrival!”
With that, Yan Changkong flashed away, soaring into the air and arriving atop a towering pavilion.
He entered the pavilion and closed all the windows and doors!
Then he sat cross-legged and closed his eyes, quietly waiting.
“Dong!”
“Dong—dong dong—”
After a moment, a strange rhythmic bell sound echoed through the sect, signaling the lockdown.
Time passed bit by bit…
Night fell.
A crescent moon hung in the sky.
One hundred miles away from the Profound Azure Sect, a massive floating ship hovered in the air, its flags fluttering.
Jiang Youlong looked up at the night sky, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth: “The show is about to begin!”
“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this blood-pumping excitement!”
A playful laugh came from beside him as a woman in a red dress stepped forward, scolding, “This could be deadly!”
At that moment, a burly man spoke in a deep voice: “Hua Hongyi, isn’t this exactly the kind of scene you enjoy?”
“Ugh, I don’t like killing; I just like… the corpses.”
Jiang Youlong withdrew his gaze and snorted coldly, “That old bastard Yan Changkong didn’t say a single truthful word today! Everyone just played along with him for a day!”
“Now, there must be many who want to capture him for soul searching, right?”
A patch of colorful clouds drifted.
Amidst the clouds, there were palatial halls and pavilions that resembled a celestial palace.
The group from the Jade Pool Holy Land was currently in the palace, reviewing today’s materials on the Emperor.
Liu Piao stood outside the hall, lost in thought as the night breeze tousled her dress.
“Branch Leader Liu!”
An elderly man with prominent cheekbones approached and hesitated for a moment before speaking, “Are we really going to make a move tonight?”
Liu Piao came back to her senses and nodded lightly, “It’s the decree personally issued by the Holy Lord!”
The old man paused for a moment, “I understand!”
In another part of the night sky, huge fireballs floated above, resembling suns.
They illuminated the area as brightly as day!
These were flying exotic beasts known as Xuan Birds, their bodies engulfed in Xuan Bird True Fire, creating a terrifying sight.
On the back of the leading Xuan Bird stood a middle-aged man clad in attire bearing the Xuan Guard insignia, standing proudly.
This man was Zhao Shanhe, the leader of the Xuan Bird Guards of the Liyue Immortal Dynasty.
Zhao Shanhe’s eyes were sharp as knives as he scanned the surroundings, slowly raising the jade tablet in his hand:
“Her Majesty has commanded that we defend the Profound Azure Sect tonight!”
“Not a single mistake is allowed!”
The other Xuan Guards looked astonished, but they quickly and solemnly responded:
“Understood!”
It was no wonder they were surprised!
Even Commander Zhao Shanhe found it somewhat unbelievable and couldn’t understand why.
The Liyue Immortal Dynasty and the Profound Azure Sect had no prior ties. Why would Her Majesty order them to protect the Profound Azure Sect?
Before seeing the secret order… Zhao Shanhe even thought that the Empress would command the capture of Yan Changkong.
…
The night gradually deepened.
Yan Changkong sat cross-legged in the Meditation Hall, all the doors and windows were closed.
At that moment, a sudden chill swept through the hall, the temperature dropped sharply, and frost began to form on the floor…
Yan Changkong sensed something: “They’re here!”
Suddenly— the windows around the great hall burst open, and a gust of wind rushed in.
He opened his eyes and looked outside.
He saw dark clouds roiling in the sky, with something enormous swirling within them.
On another side, snowflakes danced down.
Yan Changkong shifted his gaze; on the opposite side of the sky, flames soared high, dozens of fireballs resembling blazing suns.
At the same time, countless powerful auras converged wildly.
During the day, it was merely a small test. The real storm was just beginning.
Yan Changkong took a deep breath; his slightly plump body trembled, yet he remained steadfast.
He closed his eyes again, swallowed the remaining calming essence pill, and spoke solemnly:
“This time, I, Yan Changkong, am gambling!”
