Chapter 8: A Ghost Ahead, A Blockade Behind
Footsteps echoed in the empty nursery, then faded into silence. Just as Dong Jianren thought the man in the suit had left, a sharp axe blade pierced through the bottom of the cabinet above him.
Staring at the blade inches from his forehead, Dong Jianren’s breath hitched, and cold sweat dripped down his face.
“Not here? Then where could this little mouse hide? Could it be outside the villa? Or maybe it’s hiding with that dead woman?” the man in the suit muttered, retracting the axe.
Footstep headed towards the door and receded down the hallway. Dong Jianren didn’t dare move, fearing the man was still lurking nearby.
Gently tapping his phone screen, he saw there was still over an hour until 8 o’clock. He didn’t know when the police would arrive.
Hiding in the bottom of the cabinet, Dong Jianren didn’t dare to make a sound, only hoping the police would come to his rescue soon.
Exhausted from the day and night’s ordeal, his eyelids grew heavy, but his instincts screamed at him to stay awake.
Time ticked by.
As Dong Jianren fought sleep, a bone-chilling sensation washed over him. His heart pounded, his limbs grew cold, and his body stiffened as if plunged into an icy abyss.
I can’t raise my head. My eyes are glued to the cabinet floor. Cold sweat drips down my face, and my cries for help are trapped in my throat.
“Who’s above me? Who’s above me?”
A cold gust of wind whispered past, sending chills through his clothes. It felt like a knife pressed against his waist, like invisible hands on his back, creeping towards his neck.
“Damn it! What is that? What is that?”
“I’m awake. I’m not dreaming!”
His eyes flew open, pupils dilated. A strand of black hair slowly emerged in his limited field of vision.
Dirty, matted, mixed with ice and blood—not the hair of a normal person.
An unseen force gripped his neck, the hair snaking up his body as his head was forced upward.
His vision twisted, his eyes bloodshot, like a doll about to burst.
“I can’t stay here! I have to get out!”
With a surge of adrenaline, he flipped open the cabinet, scrambling out like a monkey.
In the dim light of his phone, he saw what had been above him: the woman’s head from the freezer.
Her eyes, filled with malice, seemed to accuse him of not saving her.
A calm voice broke the silence behind him. “So, you’re the little mouse hiding here! Why didn’t you hide better?”
Dong Jianren turned to see the man in the suit, a massive axe in one hand, a chain in the other. The other end of the chain was attached to the white-dressed girl from the second floor, her tongue cut out, now lying limp on the floor.
It was horrifying to imagine what she had endured. Her thin clothes were in tatters, revealing bruised skin. Her once-lovely face was swollen beyond recognition.
Dong Jianren’s heart sank. “This is truly a case of misfortune never coming singly! A ghost blocking the way ahead, a maniac intercepting from behind!”
Confident that Dong Jianren was trapped, the man smiled. “You saw everything in the storage room, didn’t you?”
He sighed, whether for himself or Dong Jianren was unclear. “What a shame. You didn’t get to appreciate such beautiful collections. It’s your own fault for being so curious. Don’t make the same mistake in your next life!”
Hearing the murderous intent in the man’s words, Dong Jianren sensed danger. He rolled backward just as the axe slammed into the spot he had just vacated.
Dong Jianren didn’t dare hesitate for a moment. He started dodging around the room, throwing anything he could grab at the man in the suit.
Perhaps angered by this desperate resistance, the man recklessly swung the axe.
Dong Jianren was quickly cornered. Looking at the man raising the axe high, his heart sank.
“This is the end for me!”
Just then, the white-dressed girl, who should have been unconscious, silently appeared behind the man. She lunged, biting into his back.
Caught off guard, the man cried out in pain and started pulling the girl’s hair.
Seizing his chance, Dong Jianren rushed past the man.
Seeing him escape, the man tried to give chase, but the girl, knocked down again, lunged once more and bit his thigh.
Dong Jianren, now at the door, looked back to see the man’s fist, as big as a sandbag, repeatedly pounding the girl’s frail body.
