Chapter 6: The Compartment Under the Cabinet
Just as Dong Jianren was about to close the notebook, a line of handwriting, different from the previous neat script, appeared on the page. This handwriting was messy and erratic.
– January 3, 2022. Chu Hang lied to me. He’s already married. I clearly heard him talking to his wife on the phone in the study. So I’m the mistress. I don’t know what to do! I really don’t know what to do!
Looking at these few short lines, with their many scribbles and corrections, Dong Jianren could feel the inner turmoil the writer must have been experiencing when they wrote these words.
– January 5, 2022. Brother Hang said his true love is for me. His marriage to his wife was a political arrangement. He said he would get a divorce soon and marry me properly. I’m willing to believe him.
– March 7, 2022. I found out I’m pregnant. I told Chu Hang, but he wasn’t happy at all. His face was so gloomy. I’m so scared.
– June 11, 2023. He secretly put abortion pills in my water! I confronted him, and he hit me!
– July 2, 2023. He wants to kill my child! How dare you! How dare you!
– July 4, 2023. He hit me again and had people watch me, not letting me leave the villa! Just because I called his wife and told her I was pregnant.
– July 5, 2023. Brother Hang, please stop hitting me! Yaoyao is in so much pain!
– August 1, 2023. Anything that threatens my child must die! Die!
Dong Jianren continued to flip through the notebook, but the handwriting became increasingly messy, and the logic more and more chaotic.
Until he reached the last page, all he saw was a page full of red writing.
“Die! Die! Die! Die! Die!”
Two full pages of the word “die” left Dong Jianren’s mouth dry.
“Damn! Was she driven mad?”
Dong Jianren quickly put the notebook back in its place, fearing that something strange might crawl out of this resentment-filled notebook.
Continuing to observe the room’s layout, Dong Jianren soon made a new discovery. Not far from the crib, there was a half-person-tall wooden wardrobe.
He slowly opened the wardrobe, and a strong musty smell, mixed with the stench of something rotting, hit his face.
There were no clothes in the wardrobe, only a slightly yellowed quilt messily piled inside.
Instantly, the words on the bloodstained photo flashed through his mind.
“Could there really be something inside this quilt?”
Dong Jianren reached out a trembling hand towards the quilt and yanked it out.
The quilt was just a slightly old one, and there was nothing inside as he had imagined.
“Damn, I’m getting paranoid.”
He stuffed the quilt back into the wardrobe, but as the back of his hand touched the bottom of the cabinet, he felt a slight looseness.
Dong Jianren quickly stopped and reached out to touch the bottom of the cabinet.
As his fingers tapped lightly, a hollow sound echoed.
“Hollow?”
Dong Jianren quickly reached down and lifted the cabinet’s bottom panel with both hands.
A rectangular pit, about two meters long, one meter wide, and half a meter deep, appeared before his eyes.
He slowly shone his phone screen into the pit, finding nothing inside.
“This would be a good hiding place.”
After checking it out, Dong Jianren put everything back in place.
He had finished inspecting the small nursery. If he wanted to continue exploring, he had to leave the room.
But recalling the pale, expressionless face framed by black hair under the dim light, Dong Jianren felt his calves cramping up again.
“Damn it, if I don’t go out, I’ll definitely die. If I go out, there’s still a chance of survival!”
He kept giving himself pep talks.
Thinking that his life was on the line once he stepped outside, Dong Jianren felt he had to leave something behind. He opened his live stream page again.
Seeing that the number of viewers in his live stream had reached a thousand, Dong Jianren felt both sad and gratified.
“Brothers,” he said, “this journey is like facing the cold wind at the Yi River. If you have some spare change, remember to burn some paper money for your streamer. Oh, and if there are any girls watching, please burn one for me too.”
Elderly Young Pioneer: “Suspecting the streamer is going to raid a widow’s village tonight, reported!”
Two-Faced Black Tiger Pure Love Sheep: “Where’s the spooky stuff? My toilet paper is ready, I’m ready to charge!”
Fill Up The Monkey, My Butt Is The Reddest: “Don’t be selfish, streamer, I want to see the girl too.”
Jiangnan Leather Factory Boss Huang He: “Is the streamer selling wallets? A century-old brand, quality guaranteed.”
Jiangnan Leather Factory Boss Huang He’s Sister-in-Law: “Brother-in-law, you ran off and left me behind! Take me with you.”
…
Looking at the barrage of comments on the screen, Dong Jianren smiled bitterly and turned it off.
Gripping the kitchen knife, he slowly opened the door. The flickering sensor light was still there, and looking outside, there was no sign of anyone.
Dong Jianren mustered his courage and walked towards the other rooms on the second floor.
There were three rooms on the second floor in total. Besides the nursery he had just hidden in, there were only two left.
Arriving at the second room, Dong Jianren first pressed his ear against the door. After confirming there was no movement inside, he slowly opened the door.
The room was pitch black, and a strange smell wafted out, making Dong Jianren’s stomach churn.
