Chapter 4: Someone Outside the Door
Cold sweat trickled down his face, his Adam’s apple bobbed, and his mind raced frantically.
“What should I do? Should I say I went to the wrong room and beg it to let me go? Or should I jump next to it, shout ‘Surprise!’ and give it a big hug? Damn it! What should I do?”
Dong Jianren felt his heart about to leap out of his throat.
Just then, a gust of cold wind blew through, causing the oil lamp on the desk to flicker. In that fleeting moment, Dong Jianren saw the true identity of the tall, dark figure.
It was a teddy bear, the size of an adult, dressed in a suit by someone.
With a mix of embarrassment and anger, Dong Jianren strode into the room.
To think I, a man who once pissed three feet high in the wind, was almost scared witless by a teddy bear.
Glaring at the stuffed animal, Dong Jianren kicked it over in frustration.
As the bear tumbled away from the chair in front of the desk, a photo placed on the chair caught his eye.
It was a photo of a couple. The woman was sweet-looking, the man tall and handsome. Even Dong Jianren, a confirmed bachelor, couldn’t help but think they were a perfect match.
But then, he suddenly felt a sticky sensation on his hand.
Following the candlelight, he saw that the hand holding the photo was now crimson. He slowly brought his hand to his nose, and the strong smell of blood made him dizzy.
“Damn it! It’s blood.”
In a panic, Dong Jianren dropped the photo.
The photo landed face down, and by the light of the kerosene lamp, Dong Jianren noticed some faint red writing on it.
He brought his phone screen closer, and a chill ran down his spine once again.
“Brother, I love you so much! But why did you cut off my head and put it in the pot? Why did you chop off my limbs and feed them to your wolfhounds? Why did you sew my torso into the quilt? Hee hee, I know, you wanted to taste my loving brain, you wanted me to pamper your beloved dog, you wanted to wake up every day to the scent of my body on the quilt. I knew it, brother still loves me the most, hee hee.”
“Damn it! You want to taste brains? What kind of brains are so delicious? Are you a love-sick fool?”
Dong Jianren didn’t know if the person who wrote these words in blood was human or ghost, but regardless, this person was definitely an S-class psychopath.
Trying hard not to look at the disturbing writing on the ground, Dong Jianren began to examine the room. The floor was covered in new wood, the walls were tiled with clean porcelain, and apart from a tall bookshelf, there was only a desk and a chair. It was clearly a study.
After a quick glance, Dong Jianren ruled out this room. Not only was it unclear whether someone came to light the kerosene lamp regularly, but the layout of the room offered no place to hide, except perhaps inside the man-sized teddy bear.
Glancing at the bear’s backside, which was now stained red with blood from the photo, an image flashed through Dong Jianren’s mind.
He saw himself curled up inside the teddy bear, his red butt sticking out, while various bosses took turns shooting at it like a target.
Dong Jianren quickly shook his head, trying to erase the gruesome scene from his mind.
Without hesitation, he turned and left the room.
Soon, Dong Jianren had explored all the rooms on the first floor except for the one clearly marked “storage room.”
He found that all the rooms on the first floor had a similar layout, with the only difference being that some rooms had an extra bed.
He walked up the wooden stairs to the second floor. As soon as he reached the top, he saw a flickering light. A faulty motion sensor light hung at the top of the stairs, its half-dead bulb creating a perfect horror atmosphere that could easily discourage anyone from moving forward.
Just then, in the dim light, Dong Jianren saw a blurry white figure standing silently at the door of a room at the end of the hallway. The figure appeared tall and thin, with long black hair draped over its shoulders.
It was too late to turn back downstairs. Dong Jianren quickly pulled open the door of a nearby room and slipped inside.
Once inside, Dong Jianren pressed his back against the door, not daring to make a sound.
He was certain that this wasn’t like the first floor. There was definitely someone standing at the end of the hallway.
His legs trembled uncontrollably, and time seemed to stand still.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Dong Jianren suddenly remembered the “weapons” he had brought. In a panic, he pulled out the rusty kitchen knife and the plastic bottle filled with his “twenty-five years of essence” from his waist.
He gripped the knife in one hand and the plastic bottle and his phone in the other.
The footsteps drew closer, stopping right outside the door of the room he was hiding in. Dong Jianren’s heart pounded in his chest.
Please don’t come in! Don’t come in! He chanted silently in his mind, but to no avail.
He wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but the door against his back suddenly felt bone-chillingly cold, raising goosebumps all over his body.
