Chapter 2: The Task Reappears
The empty and silent alley echoed only with Dong Jianren’s cries of pain. Waves of piercing agony caused his limbs to tremble uncontrollably.
Just when he thought he would die there, the tormenting pain that had nearly driven him mad suddenly vanished.
His cheap short-sleeved shirt was now a crumpled mess from his writhing, and sticky sweat plastered his hair to his forehead in clumps.
“Gasp! Gasp! Gasp!”
Dong Jianren, his arms and legs regaining some strength, struggled to his feet, panting heavily.
The dripping sweat and the stench of his shirt reminded him that everything that had happened was real.
Recalling the cold, emotionless voice that had suddenly echoed in his mind, the events of last night’s live stream flooded his thoughts.
“Damn it!”
Ignoring everything else, he ran towards his home like a madman, stumbling and falling.
Back home, he didn’t bother to take off his dirty clothes. He frantically turned on his computer and logged into his live stream platform.
As the live stream page loaded, he immediately saw the avatar of the person who had sent the link last night.
His mouse clicked frantically, trying to enter the person’s homepage to send a private message asking why they had harmed him.
But after clicking, a message saying “This user does not exist” appeared, plunging him into despair.
Collapsing into his gaming chair, he knew he was in trouble. What happened tonight could not be explained by science. No technology could implant a voice into his brain without any contact, let alone inflict such excruciating pain.
The frustration and fear in his heart threatened to explode. Everything that had happened was driving him, a loser, to the brink of madness.
Just then, the two lines of prominent small text under his avatar in the upper right corner caught his eye.
Immunity Rights Remaining: 0 times.
Exchange Point Balance: 0.
He clicked on “Immunity Rights” at the top, but nothing happened. However, when he clicked on “Exchange Point Balance,” something magical occurred.
A page similar to an online shopping site popped up.
Looking at the dazzling array of goods, he was momentarily speechless.
Maoshan Protective Talisman (Note: Ineffective against fierce ghosts and above, can withstand one fatal attack), 500 exchange points.
Qiankun Eight Trigrams Mirror (Note: Ineffective against fierce ghosts and above, can reflect ghost attacks once, ineffective against physical attacks), 500 exchange points.
A Drop of Century-Old Green Ox Tears (Note: Can reveal the host of a parasitic ghost, effective for ten minutes), 200 exchange points.
Ghost Fetus (Note: Requires host’s fresh blood to nourish thirty-six times, can grow, easily backfires if above the Menggui stage, cultivate with caution!), 2000 exchange points.
Twelve Hours of Yang Lifespan (Note: I don’t think this needs a note), 10,000 exchange points.
Return to Reality (Note: Nothing much to say, good luck, young man), 100,000 exchange points.
…
Staring at the endless list of goods, Dong Jianren was simply at a loss for words.
“What the hell are these things? An online store run by the King of Hell?”
Just as Dong Jianren was about to close the page, a line of tiny text appeared in the bottom right corner, barely noticeable.
Ten thousand RMB (Note: If I were you, I wouldn’t do anything this stupid. (꒪Д꒪)ノ), worth 100 exchange points.
“Damn it! You put such important information in the corner? And you’re mocking me?”
Before Dong Jianren could finish his cursing tirade, the screen started flickering again. A sense of unease crept back into his heart. He wanted to turn and run, but a voice in his mind kept telling him that if he missed this information, he would most certainly not survive the second night.
As expected, the same blood-red text reappeared.
[Requirement: Arrive at Chang’an Road, Lakeside Villa 12, before 8 p.m. tomorrow. Failure to arrive on time will result in mission failure. Penalty: Obliteration!]
Main Mission 1: Discover the truth of the storage room. Mission completion reward: 500 exchange points! Mission failure: Obliteration!
Main Mission 2: Survive until 8 a.m. the next day inside the villa without being caught by anyone or it (**). Mission completion reward: 500 exchange points! Mission failure: Obliteration!
Looking at the twisted crimson characters, Dong Jianren’s hands were ice-cold, and sweat drenched his back once again. Not only did these tasks reek of the supernatural, but the mysterious “**” in the second task filled Dong Jianren’s mind with all sorts of wild imaginings.
“Oh my god! This is insane! They’re trying to kill me!”
Furious, Dong Jianren was about to smash his computer, but the memory of the agonizing pain in the alley flashed back, and his hands weakly dropped.
“Waaah!”
Dong Jianren, who considered himself a seven-foot-tall man who would bleed but not cry, suddenly curled up like a woman and sobbed.
A ray of dawn peeked through Dong Jianren’s window.
Having not slept all night, Dong Jianren stared at the wall with bloodshot eyes.
As if having made a decision, he resolutely opened the door and walked outside.

Flies buzzing everywhere were a testament to the restaurant’s exceptional (or lack of) sanitary conditions. A mud-covered figure sat hunched over, devouring large pork-filled wontons.
A middle-aged woman with oil stains on her skirt looked worriedly at her small dining table, or rather, at the thin young man who had already eaten ten bowls of wontons and a large steamed bun.
