Chapter 13: The Neurotic Security Guard
[Translation By Divinity]
Dong Jianren took a taxi directly to the Third Hospital. Stepping out, he surveyed the surroundings and saw his destination in the distance—the Third Mental Hospital, nestled amidst a wasteland of waist-high weeds and foul-smelling ditches.
Dong Jianren compared the image on his phone’s navigation with the scene before him.
“This looks nothing like the picture!”
The hospital in the photo appeared modern and impressive, but the reality was a chilling, dilapidated structure, like a half-buried corpse.
Looking at the tightly locked hospital gate, Dong Jianren struggled to believe it was still in operation.
He approached the guardhouse and saw a security guard dozing in his chair, nodding off repeatedly.
Dong Jianren gently tapped on the window. To his surprise, the guard bolted upright, swinging his baton wildly.
Dong Jianren sensed something was off about this guard. Before he could even speak, the guard shouted at him in a near-roar, “What time is it?!”
The guard’s question caught Dong Jianren off guard. He instinctively replied, “It’s almost eight o’clock.”
The guard finally let out a long sigh of relief.
Then, looking at the unfamiliar Dong Jianren, he asked, “Who are you? What are you doing here?”
Dong Jianren naturally didn’t dare reveal his true purpose, so he answered casually, “I’m a reporter sent by the city. I’m here to interview the hospital and report on its condition, to see if we can attract some funding for renovations.”
Dong Jianren had expected the security guard to welcome him in after hearing this, but unexpectedly, the guard flew into a rage.
“Get out! Get out! Get out! Wherever you came from, go back there! You’re not welcome here!”
Dong Jianren was confused, not understanding how he had offended the guard. He persisted, “If you stop me from entering, your dean will definitely punish you when he finds out!”
Unexpectedly, the guard showed no fear. Instead, he sneered, “The dean? Humph!”
This puzzled Dong Jianren even more. Looking at the security guard with his greying hair, he ruled out the possibility that this was a Gen Z worker challenging authority.
Dong Jianren was about to say something more but was forcefully dragged and pushed away from the hospital gate by the guard.
Unwilling to give up, Dong Jianren didn’t leave but waited in the distance.
Seeing that Dong Jianren refused to leave, the guard finally sighed and walked over to him.
“Young man, listen to my advice! Leave this place quickly. It’s not a good place!” The guard said earnestly.
Seeing the guard’s softened attitude, Dong Jianren was still full of confusion.
“Why do you say that?”
Hearing Dong Jianren’s question, the guard raised his hand and pointed to his eyes.
Observing the guard’s gesture, Dong Jianren finally noticed something was amiss.
At first, he thought the guard had a squint. After being driven away, he even mocked the arrogant guard in his heart, thinking one eye was on lookout while the other was standing guard.
Now, getting closer, he could see that one of the guard’s eyes was actually fake.
“Young man, you see my eye, right? It was blinded by a ghost!”
“A ghost?”
Dong Jianren’s heart skipped a beat, but he still feigned disbelief.
“Yes, to be precise, it was poked blind by a person possessed by a ghost.”
The guard’s expression was serious.
“And this place, you absolutely cannot enter after nine o’clock at night. Except for the patients inside, anyone who enters will surely die!”
After saying this, the guard raised his hand and glanced at his watch.
“It’s almost nine. I’m getting off work.”
He stopped trying to persuade Dong Jianren, turned back, and securely locked the hospital gate with a large iron lock. Then, as if something were chasing him, he fled.
Watching the guard’s hasty departure, Dong Jianren’s heart felt heavy.
“Ghosts?”
Having experienced the previous incident and the encounters in his live stream, Dong Jianren had no doubt about the existence of ghosts.
He quickly came to a conclusion: there were definitely supernatural beings in this hospital.
Thinking of this, Dong Jianren immediately opened his exchange page. Looking at the dazzling array of items, he was momentarily unsure what to buy.
[Maoshan Protective Talisman x1, (Note: Ineffective against Vengeful Ghosts and above, can withstand one fatal attack) Worth 500 exchange points.]
[Qiankun Thunder Talisman x1, (Note: Ineffective against Evil Ghosts and above, can summon heavenly thunder for attack, physical attack effect halved) Worth 200 exchange points.]
[Century-Old Green Bull Tear x1, (Note: Can see through ghost possessions, duration of use: ten minutes) Worth 200 exchange points.]
…
After some thought, Dong Jianren chose to buy one Maoshan Protective Talisman, one Qiankun Thunder Talisman, and one drop of Century-Old Green Bull Tear. Considering the security guard’s warning about ghosts possessing people, other items were either too expensive or wouldn’t be of much help in this situation.
Dong Jianren wasn’t a particularly extravagant person, but to survive, he had to invest all his resources.
Watching the clock inch closer to ten, Dong Jianren took a deep breath and strode towards the hospital wall.
