I Became the Only Omega in a Makjang Novel - C102
Only after blurting out the words did a wave of tension hit me. Now that I had expressed my intention, it was Do Seung-jo’s turn to share his thoughts.
“You’re going to have it?” Do Seung-jo asked in an uncharacteristically dumb voice. It sounded more like he was talking to himself rather than asking me, so I didn’t say anything.
Until I made my decision, Do Seung-jo hadn’t shown any thoughts about the baby.
Whirr.
Only the sound of the hair dryer filled the space between us. As I thought the response was slower than expected, I grew anxious. I bit my lower lip.
The Do Seung-jo I liked and knew wasn’t an irresponsible person, but responsibility and feelings are two different things.
I had faith that Do Seung-jo wouldn’t say he disliked it. But what if he showed even a slight dislike in his actions, contrary to his words?
It was sudden, and it wasn’t Do Seung-jo’s fault either. I could understand that rationally.
Fortunately, the people who knew about my pregnancy were surprisingly supportive, but I knew that was miraculously rare.
So the person directly involved, Do Seung-jo, might find it more burdensome because it was his own situation.
‘It’s because such an impossible thing has happened.’
While I could understand it rationally, my heart was beating uneasily. A very brief moment felt extremely long.
As the silence grew longer, my confidence to respond gracefully to whatever reaction Do Seung-jo might show rapidly diminished.
“Ahem. Isn’t your hair dry enough now?”
So I changed the subject before Do Seung-jo could give any answer. I suddenly became afraid to hear the answer.
“There’s still more to dry.”
“I’m hungry now. Let’s eat quickly.”
Even though postponing wouldn’t suddenly change Do Seung-jo’s mind, I wanted to avoid this moment for now.
“Four bedrooms?”
But before we could leave, unexpected words came out of Do Seung-jo’s mouth.
“…Huh?”
Unable to follow the flow of conversation, I asked back with a dumb expression, and Do Seung-jo asked as if it should be obvious.
“I mean the house we’ll live in.”
If someone had seen us, they might have thought I was the strange one for being surprised, given how matter-of-factly Do Seung-jo was speaking.
“…The house we’ll live in?”
Why is the house suddenly being mentioned here?
“I think it would be better to move earlier because moving after having the baby seems too difficult.”
“…Huh?”
Do Seung-jo raised his eyebrows, seemingly surprised by my reaction.
“Well, we’ll have to take care of the baby together when it’s born, right?”
“You mean live together?”
“You said you weren’t ready before, but the situation is different now, isn’t it?”
“…”
I was at a loss for words, unable to answer the question that focused more on living together than on the baby.
While I was still unsure whether I should be happy about this or annoyed, Do Seung-jo seemed unable to wait even for that.
Interpreting my question somehow, Do Seung-jo muttered with a serious face.
“You still haven’t thought about living together?”
Unlike me, who had just decided to have the baby, Do Seung-jo was already thinking about merging our lives in his head.
Although Do Seung-jo had mentioned living together before, I thought it seemed premature and assumed the matter had been settled for now.
“I couldn’t.”
I answered honestly to his question that implied it should be obvious.
Soon, Hae-na, seemingly tired of waiting, called out to us loudly.
“How much longer until your hair is dry?”
“It’s done. We’re coming out!”
I answered reflexively and looked up at Do Seung-jo.
There was a time when I thought his expressions were easy to read, but now I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
‘I don’t want to rush him.’
Although I wanted to hear his answer right away, I didn’t want to rush him. Even as I stared at his face, Do Seung-jo was lost in thought and didn’t notice.
Feeling somewhat mischievous, I placed my hand on Do Seung-jo’s shoulder. Only then did he look at me. I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him.
Do Seung-jo naturally tried to continue by wrapping his arms around my waist but stopped his hands in mid-air.
Since hearing that he should be careful, Do Seung-jo hadn’t even given a tight hug. I reluctantly pulled away.
“Living together is a discussion for later. For now, I want to know what you think about this.”
“…Ah.”
“Let’s go quickly. Hae-na will get angry.”
As soon as we left the room, I headed to the kitchen while cooling my face with a hand fan. Hae-na raised one eyebrow and commanded,
“Oppa, why did you come out alone? Go back and bring him.”
At Hae-na’s words, I had to return to the room and lead out Do Seung-jo, who was still standing there motionless.
It was a peaceful afternoon. Hae-na handed Hui-yul a cup of warm tea and casually said,
“By the way, Mom and Dad said they’re coming to Korea next week after our semester ends.”
“…Huh? Why?”
Our parents had said they probably wouldn’t return for at least two years until they adjusted, so why this sudden return?
Hae-na glared at me in response to my question.
“You have to tell them. You weren’t planning to be an unfilial child who tells them in the last month, were you?”
“…Of course not. But how did you know I was going to have the baby?”
I had just made the decision myself.
Seeing my surprised face, Hae-na spoke as if it was obvious.
“It was so obvious that you were already leaning towards it.”
I thought I had hidden it well. I touched my innocent cheeks.
“…Did you tell our parents everything?”
“No. It’s not something to say over the phone, and it’s not my place to tell.”
“Then what did you say to make them suddenly decide to come?”
“I just told them there was something important. They were already thinking of coming since they had other business too.”
It meant they were already planning to come, but Hae-na’s words made them advance their return.
* * *
If there was someone most surprised by the news of Hui-yul’s pregnancy, it would undoubtedly be Do Seung-jo.
Although he and Hui-yul had spent passionate nights that could have resulted in pregnancy if they were a normal couple, he never actually thought it would happen.
So he couldn’t easily figure out how to react.
Fortunately or unfortunately, thanks to the options Hae-na reminded him of, he gained more time to think.
‘He’ll probably say he’s going to have it.’
Although Hui-yul had postponed his answer saying he would think about it, Do Seung-jo could guess what answer Hui-yul would give.
Hui-yul, who was so full of affection that he even pitied himself, would have the baby.
To outsiders, it might seem like Do Seung-jo was the one in the disadvantageous position, but objectively thinking about this relationship, he was the one who was more invested.
While Hui-yul seemed overwhelmed just by focusing on the present, Do Seung-jo had been prepared to spend the rest of his life with Hui-yul from the early stages of their relationship.
He had thought before that Hui-yul might want to start a family someday. Unlike himself, Hui-yul valued family greatly.
He thought that since it was an area he couldn’t change through effort, there might come a time when Hui-yul would inevitably care about it.
While he was satisfied with just the two of them, what if there came a moment when Hui-yul worried about not fitting into the category of a ‘normal family’ as defined by others?
For Do Seung-jo, family meant entities that trampled on and competed with each other.
His grandfather had cared for Do Seung-jo in his own way, but that was only because Do Seung-jo had shown himself to be different from the other children and grandchildren.
It wasn’t unconditional love, but a strict give-and-take relationship.
He didn’t have complaints about that fact now. It meant his abilities were recognized.
He remembered Hui-yul’s back as he returned to his family after resolving Park Seungyun’s incident.
He thought he could find a way to adjust well even if their individual differences weren’t greatly reduced.
‘I’ll have to hold onto him even if I get hurt in front of his eyes.’
Because when he got hurt, Hui-yul would put everything else aside and look only at him. Even if he stopped loving him, he planned to at least gain sympathy and grasp that gaze.
Because he loved him.
So when he first heard about the pregnancy, the initial emotion was perplexity.
Do Seung-jo’s entire world was filled just with Hui-yul, and he had never thought another being would intervene.
He had thought about all future matters under the premise that there would be no child. It had been natural that there would be no children in their lives since they started dating.
Do Seung-jo stared at the soundly sleeping Hui-yul, quietly kissed his forehead, and then pulled up the fallen blanket to cover him up to his chin.
“…I don’t know.”
He muttered, rubbing his dry face with his hand.
It felt like stepping into an unknown continent without any preparation, beyond emotions of like or dislike.
If at first he was bewildered, then next he thought it wasn’t bad that he had gained another means to hold onto Hui-yul.
He was glad that he could give Hui-yul something he might want.
He still had no thoughts about the child itself. The existence of a child was too unfamiliar to Do Seung-jo.
‘…It might be nice if it resembles him.’
But what if the child resembled Hui-yul?
Do Seung-jo gently poked Hui-yul’s soft cheek with his finger and chuckled.
He thought he might not become very attached if the child resembled himself, but it might not be bad if he could think of it as seeing a young Hui-yul.
