Gao Wu: Invincibility Begins with Basic Archery - Chapter 2 Leveling Up
Chapter 2 Leveling Up
The three walked in silence until they reached a house with a firelight glowing inside.
“Dad! You’re back!”
Suddenly, a thin, pale boy of about twelve or thirteen years old ran out from the house and threw himself into Chen Guodong’s arms. He was Chen Fan’s younger brother, Chen Chen.
Chen Chen looked up, glanced around, and then asked with some disappointment, “Dad, did you not bring any food back this time?”
As soon as he spoke, his stomach growled.
Chen Guodong’s face turned red, and he stammered, “This time, something unexpected happened. Next time, definitely next time.”
“But you said the same thing last time.”
The boy blinked, his eyes clear and innocent.
The woman quickly pulled him away and reproached, “Didn’t you see your dad got hurt? Be careful not to touch his wounds.”
She didn’t dare to say that this time his dad almost didn’t make it back.
“Huh?”
The boy followed the woman’s gaze and immediately stepped back in fright, “Dad, I’m, I’m sorry.”
“This has nothing to do with you.”
Chen Guodong patted the boy’s head, then looked at the woman and said, “Make some rice soup, okay? Do we still have money at home? Let me see if I can go to Song Family Fort tomorrow to exchange for some food.”
“We’ve run out long ago. I even exchanged the wedding ring you gave me.” The woman shook her head and then went into the house, scooping a small half spoon of rice from the bottom of the jar to make porridge.
There wasn’t much left in the rice jar, at most it could last another week. If they finished this too, they would really have nothing to eat.
“Xiao Fan.”
Chen Guodong waved at Chen Fan and asked with concern, “How is your body?”
“It’s fine now, Dad.”
Chen Fan tried to imitate the original owner’s actions and tone.
In his memory, the original owner seemed to be somewhat afraid of his reserved father, which made their relationship a bit distant. This was actually a good thing for him.
Chen Guodong opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he just nodded and said briefly, “As long as you’re fine.”
Dinner was thin porridge, mostly water with some grains of rice at the bottom of the pot.
The family of four licked their bowls clean, and Chen Guodong, as the main breadwinner, had another bowl.
Then, they each went to rest.
Chen Fan and his brother slept in the west room, and he could hear the faint sounds of his parents’ conversation. It wasn’t that he wanted to eavesdrop, but the house was indeed simple and not soundproof.
“Guodong, do you know? I was so worried today, afraid you wouldn’t come back like the others,” his mother whispered, sobbing.
“I won’t have any problems, don’t worry.” The man’s voice was steady and strong.
“But what about next time?”
The whole house fell silent.
Chen Fan sighed softly.
Despite the hardship of having barely enough food to get by, many people didn’t even have a place to stay. In those cities, not to mention whether they would accept you, just the dangers along the way would be too much for ordinary people to handle.
Strength, only with great strength, can one survive.
He closed his eyes, and with a thought, a game-like character attribute panel appeared vividly in his mind.
Realm: None
Level: 1 (0/1)
Constitution: 8 (The average for adult males is 10, same below)
Strength: 7
Agility: 7
Spirit: 5
Skills: None
Potential Points: 1 (1 point/day)
Besides these, there was a big plus sign next to the level, which was particularly eye-catching.
This plus sign had not been there an hour ago. He had transmigrated the night before, so it had been about 25 hours in total.
When the attribute panel first appeared, he thought it was his imagination. After confirming it multiple times, he finally accepted that his system had arrived.
This plus sign should require the consumption of potential points.
Chen Fan took a deep breath, and with a thought, the plus sign seemed to be pressed. Immediately, a powerful warm current surged from his heart, flowing to every corner of his body.
“Crack, crack.”
A faint cracking sound came from various parts of his body, bringing an indescribable sense of ease.
“Is this strengthening my body?”
Chen Fan had this thought in his mind, feeling his body becoming stronger.
A few seconds later, the warm current dissipated. If it weren’t for the sweat soaking his clothes, he would have doubted whether what just happened was real.
Clenching his fist, he indeed felt a sense of strength that hadn’t been there before.
“Right, the system!”
He quickly looked at it, and sure enough, his attributes had changed.
Realm: None
Level: 2 (0/2)
Constitution: 8.8
Strength: 7.7
Agility: 7.7
Spirit: 5.5
Skills: None
Potential Points: 0 (1 point/day)
“!!”
His eyes lit up. All four attributes had increased by about ten percent, roughly reaching the standard for adult males.
No wonder he felt stronger.
He became more excited, feeling that there was a glimmer of hope for his future. Unfortunately, the potential points had returned to zero, and nothing else had changed.
“It seems I need one more day to gain another potential point.”
Chen Fan sighed. The plus sign next to the level had also disappeared, and the 0/1 had become 0/2.
“It seems that to continue leveling up, I need to consume two potential points. I wonder how to increase the rate of potential points. One point a day, and we don’t even have food to eat. Surviving another day is a luxury.”
Chen Fan muttered to himself. The time left for him was running out.
His eyes moved slowly down to the skills section, which was empty.
So, this is a hint for him to learn martial arts skills?
However, he hadn’t heard of anyone in this fort who knew martial arts. He himself remembered a few Tai Chi moves, but he learned them in school without much focus, and they had long been forgotten after entering society.
Besides, even if there was Tai Chi, in a place lacking medicine, you can’t fight beasts in close combat. If you get injured, you can only heal yourself. If the injury is too severe, you can only wait to die.
If he had to learn, it would be best to learn archery. At the very least, learn to use long weapons like spears or sticks. The longer the weapon, the stronger it is. Only then would knives and swords come into play.
“I’ll try tomorrow.”
Chen Fan quickly made up his mind to learn archery.
There weren’t many iron tools in the fort, and iron bows were even rarer. Only a few people, including his father, were equipped with longbows, while others used spears, shields, and other melee weapons.
As for guns? Those were valuable items, killing low-level beasts with ease, making them extremely expensive!
But that didn’t matter. He could start with wood, using broken bowstrings or beast tendons to make a wooden bow. Gathering these resources wasn’t difficult.
Even if archery wasn’t a martial art, he could learn it for self-defense and join the hunting team in the future. After all, relying on others wasn’t a solution; he needed to support himself.
Otherwise, in this c
ruel world, he wouldn’t survive.
Chen Fan thought about it and gradually felt sleepy, drifting off until he was awakened by a scream outside early the next morning.
