Don't Trample on Innocent Love - Chapter 20
A silence fell among the four people seated around the outdoor table.
Ophelia rolled her big eyes, glancing back and forth between Robern and Grace. Hugo observed Robern across from him, and Robern was staring intently at Ophelia.
While observing the whole scene, Grace thought it was quite an amusing picture, so she took a sip and continued.
“Thank you all for agreeing to my sudden request. The imperial palace can get a bit lonely, you know. I suddenly miss having people around.”
“Please call us more often, Your Highness.”
Ophelia and Grace had no particular feelings for each other. No, to be more precise, it was only Ophelia who felt that way. Grace was well aware that Robern had feelings for Ophelia. They did sleep together occasionally, but even she had lost count of how many times she had heard Robern mutter Ophelia’s name during his sleep.
If Grace had feelings for Robern, this incident would have wounded her. Meanwhile, Robern was not even aware of his own feelings.
“Miss Denev, I heard you’ll be having your engagement ceremony soon. I saw in the newspaper that you were visiting the Dumiél Atelie.”
“Yes, that’s how it turned out.”
“Congratulations.”
“Thank you, Your Highness.”
Ophelia still hadn’t figured out the reason why Grace had called her. Their relationship wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good enough to have lunch together either. Ophelia lacked the ability to flatter her superiors, and even if she had it, she wouldn’t have done it. On the other hand, Grace was busy giving chances to the noble ladies who tried to impress her.
The reason these two completely different people were in the same place was one thing: Grace had a question for Ophelia.
And judging from the current conversation, what she was about to say was…
“Well, how did you two meet?”
Ah, as expected.
“These days, I also want to get engaged, you know, not just any old love affair, but a love affair that will set the capital city abuzz. Could you share your secret with me?”
With a smooth smile on her face, Ophelia looked at Grace’s innocent eyes. It was indeed a good idea that she’d planned her words beforehand.
“Whenever life becomes boring, I often go on trips. My most recent trip happened to be to Hugo’s hometown. I sneaked out on my own, evading the knights, and enjoyed traveling alone, but then I was caught by some ruffians, and Hugo saved me.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Robern let out a derisive laugh. Ophelia, with her face stiffened, looked at Robern, her eyelashes trembling.
For a moment, she was surprised that he was looking at her chest, but soon, she thought it was just her imagination as his gaze slid up to her face.
“It’s too lacking in creativity.”
“…”
“You should have said something more plausible. The knights of the Denev family wouldn’t be so soft, and if such an incident had occurred, the Marquis Denev wouldn’t let it go unpunished, don’t you think?”
“So you’re saying I’m lying?”
“Maybe.”
Ophelia was exasperated. Of course, she was lying, but Robern constantly picking a fight with her was slowly making her lose her cool.
“Why would I do that?”
Robern’s gaze shifted. Ophelia realized he was looking at Hugo.
“Well, there must be a good reason for it.”
“No, I’m not lying.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes.”
Why on earth is he still so convinced that she still likes him? Even if he thinks that she does because she’s been chasing him around until recently, she has already published the engagement announcement! His dismissal of the possibility that she might have given her heart to another man is still proof that he still looked down on her…
