Chapter 5: The Ghostly Bus
[Translation By Divinity]
Lu Cheng’s face was pale as he stared blankly into space.
He couldn’t bring himself to tell Lu Shiran that he, too, had experienced the same horrifying events.
A premonition gnawed at him – the horror might have just begun, with even more dreadful things lurking on the horizon…
It was already past five in the afternoon, and the sky remained stubbornly overcast. The autumnal dusk cast a pall of bleakness over everything.
Lu Cheng decided it was time to head back. He urged Lu Shiran to call him immediately if anything unusual occurred.
Lu Shiran walked him downstairs. As Lu Cheng reached the courtyard gate, he bumped into Lu Shiran’s father, Lu Yuanshan, who was returning home.
“Uncle, I’m leaving now. Come visit us in the city when you have time.”
Lu Yuanshan nodded, his expression distant. “Xiao Cheng.”
Lu Cheng had only taken a few steps when Lu Yuanshan called out to him.
He turned around and saw a complex mix of emotions swirling in Lu Yuanshan’s melancholic eyes.
“Uncle, is there something you need?”
Lu Yuanshan’s lips moved hesitantly, his voice raspy.
“Oh, no, nothing. You should head back quickly. It’s getting dark; be careful on the road.”
“Okay, I will. Thank you for your concern, Uncle. Take care of yourself.”
As Lu Cheng walked away, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Lu Yuanshan had something he wanted to say but couldn’t bring himself to voice. He wondered what it could be.
When he was a good distance away, he glanced back and saw Lu Yuanshan still standing at the door, watching him from afar.
Soon, Lu Cheng arrived at the bus stop by the road. He was the only one waiting, the wide road completely deserted.
In late autumn, night always falls early. It wasn’t even six o’clock, but the sky had already turned a dusky gray.
The weather had grown noticeably colder. The evening wind cut through his clothes, sending a chill right to his bones.
Lu Cheng wrapped his coat tighter around himself, scanning the road anxiously, hoping the bus would arrive soon.
He tried his best to banish the terrifying images from his mind, but Lu Shiran’s pained expression and fear-filled eyes kept flashing before him.
Suddenly, he remembered the mysterious and frightening woman in the red dress he had encountered on his way here that morning. It was as if she were lurking in some dark corner, watching him with her cold gaze.
Just as Lu Cheng’s anxiety was reaching a fever pitch, the last bus finally arrived.
The bus stopped, and a few passengers, all villagers from Jingou Village, disembarked.
When the last passenger slowly stepped off the bus, Lu Cheng’s heart lurched, and his face drained of color.
He couldn’t believe his eyes. The last passenger to get off was the mysterious and terrifying woman in the red dress.
Her face was pale, her expression cold as she fixed Lu Cheng with an eerie, unfathomable gaze, like a bottomless pool.
An icy aura emanated from her, sending shivers down Lu Cheng’s spine.
He couldn’t bear to meet her eyes and scrambled onto the bus as if running for his life.
He and the driver were the only two people left on board.
The bus started moving. Lu Cheng didn’t dare to look back, but he could feel those eerie, penetrating eyes still fixed on him.
The memory of the woman’s pale, emotionless face and those unnerving eyes made him shudder, filling him with fear and unease.
Who was she? Why did she keep looking at him with such a terrifying gaze?
Could she really be the woman from his nightmare, the one who wanted to kill Su Wanqing?
Night had fallen, and darkness quickly enveloped the world. The evening wind, now carrying a biting chill, whipped through the trees lining the road, making them rustle ominously.
A light drizzle began to fall from the sky. The road was nearly empty, devoid of vehicles and pedestrians, leaving the driver to focus solely on navigating through the dreary night.
Lu Cheng couldn’t get a clear look at the driver’s face as he never turned around, as if Lu Cheng were the only passenger on board.
The bus was eerily empty, the silence amplifying his fear. It was pitch black outside, but the driver hadn’t turned on the lights, leaving the bus shrouded in darkness and cold. In the gloom, Lu Cheng couldn’t shake the feeling that a pair of eerie eyes was watching him.
The sensation of those terrifying eyes boring into his back sent chills down his spine, and he broke out in a cold sweat.
“Driver, could you please turn on the lights?” he called out, his voice strained with urgency.
“The lights are broken,” the driver replied in a chilling monotone, still not turning his head.
Lu Cheng found the driver’s behavior strange, even a bit frightening.
He had no choice but to curl up in his seat. Outside the window, the world was cloaked in darkness. The wind-whipped shadows of trees danced like ghostly apparitions, adding to his unease.
The bus continued its steady journey. Lu Cheng’s head felt heavy, and drowsiness threatened to overtake him. He closed his eyes, desperately trying to banish the fear and anxiety gnawing at his mind.
Suddenly, in a half-awake state, Lu Cheng saw a woman board the bus. She was wearing a red dress, her pale, indifferent face devoid of any emotion.
She walked straight towards Lu Cheng and sat down beside him. A bone-chilling coldness emanated from her, and her mysterious, deep eyes stared at him coldly.
Lu Cheng jolted awake, his heart pounding in his chest. The bus was still empty except for him and the driver, who remained focused on the road.
He stared blankly out the window.
The rain seemed to be intensifying, the cold drops striking the windowpane, sending a shiver through him.
After a moment, he closed his eyes again.
In his hazy state, Lu Cheng couldn’t shake the feeling of those mysterious eyes watching him from the darkness, seemingly right behind him. An icy sensation crept down his spine, and the fear in his heart grew stronger.
He lost track of time until the bus lurched to a sudden stop. The door opened with a bang.
When he opened his eyes, a woman was already getting off.
Under the dim yellow streetlight, he saw that the woman was wearing a red dress. Her face, illuminated by the pale light, appeared even more pale and cold. Her long, flowing hair was tousled by the night wind.
Looking at that familiar yet terrifying face, Lu Cheng’s head throbbed, his scalp tingling.
He stammered, asking the driver when the woman in the red dress had boarded the bus.
“She’s been sitting behind you the whole time. Didn’t you know?” The driver’s voice was still chilling, a bit frightening.
Lu Cheng let out a cry and collapsed onto his seat, his face drained of color. Cold sweat beaded on his forehead, and fear washed over him like a dark wave.
He now understood why he had felt eyes watching him in the darkness. The terrifying woman in the red dress had been sitting right behind him!
Overwhelmed by terror, Lu Cheng shakily made his way forward, intending to get closer to the driver, hoping it would lessen his fear.
However, when his eyes fell upon the driver’s grim back, he stopped in his tracks. The driver seemed just as terrifying.
He had no choice but to retreat to his original seat, his heart pounding in his chest. Thankfully, the bus had entered the city, and there was light on the road.
“Driver, could you please put on some music? It’s too quiet.”
“What kind of music would you like?” the driver asked coldly, still not turning around.
“Anything is fine.”
The driver inserted a cassette into the player. Strangely, no music played for a long time.
Lu Cheng was puzzled. Suddenly, there was a sound from the speakers.
But it wasn’t music. It was an extremely low and terrifying woman’s voice: “Tonight at midnight, I will come to see you…”
