Contract Marriage with Memory Loss on Top - Chapter 65
Kwon Ki-won’s large hand held the documents. As the papers turned slowly one by one, the man’s eyes repeatedly moved from left to right. When it seemed he had read quite a few clauses, Yeon-woo slyly brought it up.
“As you can see, our marriage contract was until yesterday.”
Yeon-woo put strength into his lips that didn’t part well and spat out the rest at a suitable speed.
“The car accident happened while trying to go to the court. Do you… remember why the court was the designated meeting place?”
“I only know that I had an appointment with you, Seo Yeon-woo. Naturally, when I looked at the schedule my secretary had, the details weren’t written, and meeting you is a private matter.”
Kwon Ki-won shrugged his shoulders slightly and turned an additional page of the contract. His gaze was still fixed on the paper. Yeon-woo took a deep breath before putting important words in his mouth. He only hoped that Ki-won wouldn’t be too perplexed by the things he would tell him.
“We were going to get a divorce by agreement, and that day was the day we were going to submit the divorce papers.”
As soon as Yeon-woo’s words ended, he felt strength being put into the man’s fingers. Yeon-woo stared at the end of the paper that was gradually crumpling, then swallowed his tension.
“You know, the end of a contract termination is divorce.”
Actually, I don’t really know how to make someone who has no memory understand. Nevertheless, Yeon-woo tried to solve the difficult problem.
Kwon Ki-won finally raised his head, seemingly having checked the last page of the contract. Yeon-woo had to gather the question marks popping up in his head as the gesture of placing the contract on the desk was unexpectedly calm. It was an expression that he couldn’t grasp what he was thinking at all.
I wonder if he understood. Since I revealed that the contract end date was yesterday and that it was an agreed divorce, I expected him to understand even if he had no memory. Around the time a glimmer of expectation flashed in Yeon-woo’s eyes, Ki-won’s voice resonated in the room.
“So.”
The low voice like a cave was cut off quickly. Yeon-woo tilted his head at the man’s reaction that wasn’t much. It was an ambiguous answer that he couldn’t tell if he understood or not. What do you mean by “So”? He blankly watched, thinking there might be more to say, but Kwon Ki-won’s closed mouth did not open.
“Of course, I understand you must be very confused now. It’s only been a day since you heard the news that you have a spouse, and now you’re hearing that you were scheduled for divorce.”
Yeon-woo, who blurted out while waving his arms, looked at Ki-won’s expression. If there was even the slightest change in his expression, he thought he could figure out the man’s emotions, but Kwon Ki-won looked like a person whose time had stopped alone. Thanks to that, Yeon-woo, who was sweating profusely, continued to provide additional explanations.
“Submitting the divorce papers doesn’t mean I’ll leave the house right away. I haven’t been able to find a place to live yet… and you allowed me to stay here until I get a studio.”
So Yeon-woo, who quickly chanted that he would help him regain his memory as much as possible until then, controlled his ragged breath. After speaking consecutively without rest, it felt like he was making excuses like someone who had a guilty conscience. It must be because Kwon Ki-won kept saying he would abandon him or not. He almost let out an empty laugh at the moment for feeling his conscience pricked even though he had done nothing wrong.
“Hmm, I see.”
Finally, a plausible sentence leaked out of Kwon Ki-won’s mouth, and at the same time, Yeon-woo’s complexion brightened. He had been worried, remembering the image of Kwon Ki-won insisting not to attach any special meaning to the contract marriage and that marriage is just marriage, but fortunately, it seemed to be a groundless fear.
“So.”
“Yes…?”
For a moment, Yeon-woo almost forgot what he had said. “So” he said… The same answer he had heard before came back again. What more do I have to say here? He had already said the important key points about the contract end date and divorce. Rather, Yeon-woo stammered like a broken machine.
“You said the contract end date was yesterday.”
“Yes… so even if it’s today, the document submission we couldn’t do yesterday…”
“I don’t know. I don’t know why I should do that.”
What is he saying now? Yeon-woo, who couldn’t understand Ki-won’s words, narrowed his eyes, and his lips kept parting and closing.
“What do you mean you don’t know why you should do it…? I’m telling you the contract has expired.”
“Yes, it was until yesterday. It’s written precisely.”
Kwon Ki-won tapped the desk with his index finger. More precisely, he was pointing to the contract with the date written on it. It didn’t seem like he didn’t understand what Yeon-woo said, so Yeon-woo found it difficult to understand why he was reacting this way. It wouldn’t be this frustrating even if he talked to a wall. Yeon-woo barely suppressed the urge to beat his chest.
“It seems you wanted to extend the contract and divorce me, which is quite regrettable.”
The man’s sharp eyes folded so softly that it looked gentle. Yeon-woo looked up at Kwon Ki-won with a crestfallen expression, wondering if he could laugh in this situation. Is there even anything to regret?
“What are you trying to say?”
“Was the contract termination agreed upon?”
“If you hadn’t agreed… we wouldn’t have gone to the court yesterday in the first place.”
Kwon Ki-won’s head slowly nodded, and Yeon-woo’s complexion remained stiff. It was because the man’s reaction never seemed positive.
“Then.”
Ki-won’s voice, uttering one syllable at a time, reached Yeon-woo.
“What about the evidence?”
The moment the sentence was completed, Yeon-woo could only make an absurd expression. Does it need evidence to terminate the contract? He was so dumbfounded that he couldn’t immediately counter Ki-won’s words.
Of course, the evidence is…
None. Yeon-woo chewed his lips that were starting to dry up.
“For example, an application for confirmation of intention to divorce by agreement with my seal on it. If it is confirmed that the seal has been stamped, that could be used as evidence.”
Yeon-woo, who was muttering “application for confirmation of intention to divorce by agreement,” turned pale. There was no way such a thing could exist. The first document he brought was ruined by Ki-won spilling soup on it.
After that, Ki-won’s lawyer said they would prepare the papers, so he didn’t pay attention to it. In short, he had no documents in his possession.
‘I only had to sign it after arriving at the court…’
The documents stamped with Ki-won’s seal were supposedly with the lawyer, but this was also uncertain.
‘What if he was also going to stamp the seal after entering the court…?’
If he had stamped the seal at home, he would have called Yeon-woo to complete the papers. However, Kwon Ki-won had never brought divorce-related documents home. It was the same at the company. It was judged that Ki-won, who values work, would not look at divorce papers during work hours.
Then there was only one conclusion. The application for confirmation of intention to divorce by agreement was never stamped with a seal in the first place.
“No… we were going to get divorced anyway. Do you really need evidence?”
“I don’t remember.”
“I’m telling you the contract has expired.”
Even if he tried to continue the conversation, it wasn’t just his feeling that they were going back to the starting point. Yeon-woo kept pointing at the marriage contract with his finger in frustration. Then the man led Yeon-woo to the desk and showed him a clause in the contract. It was the part about the automatic extension of the contract.
“Unless there is a special intention to terminate, the contract is automatically extended in one-year units. In short, just because the contract has expired doesn’t mean it’s terminated.”
Yeon-woo stared blankly at the contract without giving any answer. It wasn’t that he wasn’t aware of the automatic renewal clause. He had even expressed his intention to terminate the contract to Ki-won, so he never dreamed that the relevant part would catch his ankle.
“I definitely told you, hyung…”
“I said I don’t remember.”
Kwon Ki-won tapped near his temples and gave a loose smile. Unlike Yeon-woo, who was turning bluer, the man’s face was full of shamelessness and ease.
Is there anything that could be evidence? If he had known this would happen, he should have gotten a confirmation of contract termination. Who would have known that Kwon Ki-won would lose his memory right before the divorce?
‘Ah, the calendar.’
Yeon-woo’s eyes suddenly lit up. Come to think of it, he had marked the contract end date on the calendar in the bedroom. Since it’s a calendar in the bedroom that Kwon Ki-won goes in and out of every day, couldn’t it be used as evidence? The moment his heart was pounding was brief, and Yeon-woo’s face darkened again.
It was because he belatedly remembered that he had thrown away the torn and unusable calendar with his own hands. The light that had appeared for a moment quickly faded away.
No matter how much he rummaged through his head, there was no physical evidence. It would be nice to have even a text message… Wait a minute, a text message?
He seemed to have written something about divorce in a text message. As something vaguely came to mind, Yeon-woo gestured to wait a moment and took out his cell phone.
