Arknightcraft Modpack - Chapter 15: She's More Likable Than You
When it comes to watching others have fun, Steven enjoys it with laughter and joy. But when it comes to a fight, he has no desire to make any witty remarks.
Any triumphant words can wait until after the fight; during a brawl, it’s better to just focus on fighting well. After all, jabbering on can only cause unnecessary harm, right?
So, after slashing through the old village chief’s arm, who had reached out to offer someone’s head as a gift, Steven hardly paused and once again swung his sword at him.
Without giving the opponent time to react, not even the nearby girl from the Inquisition could see clearly how Steven moved. A flash of cold sword aura later, and the old man knelt down directly on the ground.
His legs were severed directly from the knees, perhaps because the speed was too fast. It wasn’t until he lay on the ground that he seemed to finally realize what had happened, letting out a painful groan.
In the brief moment of the exchange, an elderly man who was perfectly fine moments ago had been transformed into a human stick by Steven.
But you can’t blame Steven, can you? Why did he have to pick on someone who wasn’t him and instead target Steven’s companion, Gladiia?
“If you came at me, I’d just smile and consider it a new source of entertainment. But targeting an amnesiac fool, do you have no shame?”
Once he was sure that the opponent had lost the ability to resist, Steven regained his smile and crouched down next to the old man.
He was very particular about where he made his cuts, ensuring that he wouldn’t bleed too much and die easily.
As Steven had said, he couldn’t tolerate anyone targeting the people around him more than targeting himself.
So, before that happened, he had to deal with this threat as best he could.
“Hey, you, the little one over there, can you handle those troublemakers? If not, why don’t you draw your sword? Sometimes, a scabbard won’t solve the problem. They’re exploiting your kindness, and as an enforcer, sometimes you have to be tough to protect more people.”
He called out to the girl who was still entangled by a group of villagers and couldn’t break free, reminding her with a hint of helplessness.
From the beginning, she had shown her weakness by not drawing her sword against those who stopped her. It was precisely because of this that the second time the village chief called for help, it was with this group of weak and feeble villagers.
The softer someone’s heart was, the harder it was for them to take action against the elderly, weak, sick, and disabled.
The old man wasn’t good for much, but he certainly understood human nature well.
It’s no wonder he dared to come back amidst the chaos.
However, the one thing he didn’t anticipate was that Steven was even stronger than he had imagined.
“I don’t need someone like you to remind me. Mind your own business, Agorian.” Despite being shocked by the sudden sword strike from Steven, the girl quickly recovered, let out a dissatisfied hum, and once again raised the lantern in her hand, forcefully suppressing the villagers closing in on her.
Perhaps what Steven said wasn’t entirely wrong, but she had her own principles to uphold.
“You’re quite principled, but I like that. She’s much more likable than you. If you could be more like her, maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess now, right?”
Watching the young girl shake her head, Steven lowered his head and continued to speak to the old man, who was gritting his teeth to prevent himself from crying out due to pain.
“Hah, principled? she’s just an attack dog subservient to the Inquisition, their words are her truth, and from the look of it, so were you.”
A curse escaped from between the old man’s clenched teeth, and his eyes were almost ready to bleed as he stared at Steven.
“Oh? Isn’t this a matter between us? Why are you labeling me like that? I don’t know what kind of grudge you have with the Inquisition, but you were just trying to harm my friend, which led to your current situation. Please get your priorities straight.”
Steven maintained his calm and nonchalant demeanor, even taking the time to review the origins of the situation with the old man.
“I said it before, you two could have settled it through a fight. You were the one who ran away first, and now you’re cursing me?”
His words completely silenced the old man’s attempts to retort.
“Another thing is, compared to me, aren’t you worse than her? Betraying humanity to join the ocean creatures, Mr. Pande, the fanatical devotee of the Deep Sea.”
Looking at the name “Pande, the Fanatical Devotee of the Deep Sea,” displayed above the old man from the beginning, Steven’s smile became even more radiant.
He had come for entertainment from the start, and he never placed any trust in what this old man was saying. After all, the man’s title had already revealed his true identity, and Steven was not blind.
“Do you understand anything? You think humans are better than sea monsters!? Only because of those monsters aid that this village is not filled with the corpses of children and the sick! To us, you, the Inquisition, and whoever harm us just for trying to survive in this fucking cursed world you are the true monster!”
After a brief silence, the old man finally shouted out.
He didn’t know how Steven had learned his identity, but in the current situation, there was no chance for him to escape. It was better to express his true feelings.
Were the creatures that emerged from the depths of the sea really monsters? Perhaps they are, but, without them, this village would have been destroyed long ago. When they were impoverished and desperate, where were the people from the Inquisition? When they were starving, where were the people from the Inquisition?
Only when this village was saved by the help of the Deep Sea Church did the Inquisition come.
The sea creatures brought them food and a chance to survive, while the people from the Inquisition wanted to take away even that glimmer of hope. How could the villagers not resent them?
But Steven didn’t know any of this, and even if he did, he would probably just shrug it off and not express any agreement with the old man’s words.
All Steven knew was that these troublemakers were targeting the people around him, and that was what concerned him.
“See, you heard him. He admits to betraying humanity. I’m not with him.”
So, after listening to the old man’s outburst, Steven’s expression didn’t change much. Instead, he continued to smile as he explained to the female judgment officer who had finished dealing with the other villagers and was approaching him.
“I’ll leave the human matters to you. I just want to ask him one last question.”
Standing up, Steven gave the old man’s severed leg a kick, showing no respect for the elderly or any thoughts of kindness.
“Why did you have to target my dau- I mean, my companion? I’m curious, is she really that special to you?”
