Chapter 41: Let’s Decide on a Destination
I told Kaito and Label that I wanted to visit a town and also that I wanted to expand our exploration range in the forest.
Surprisingly, they both agreed without any objections.
I had expected them to oppose the idea, so I was surprised.
Kaito said,
“This forest may be dangerous, but I doubt Onee-chan would ever lose. And I think it would be safe at night if you, Label, and I took turns keeping watch.”
He assuaged my fears.
And then Label said,
“Even if you go to town, Kotoha-sama, your appearance is no different from a human as long as you don’t activate 『Dragon Transformation』. And there’s no one else who can sense the aura of a dragon like I can, so you need not worry. Of course, if anyone were to act disrespectfully towards Kotoha-sama, regardless of whether they sense it or not, I would eliminate them on the spot.”
So Label was staying behind.
I didn’t know anything about the areas beyond our usual range of activity, whether we went to a town or expanded our exploration range in the forest. So I asked Kaito for an explanation.
“Let’s see, this Great Forest of Chrys is in the southeastern part of the continent. If you keep going east, you’ll eventually reach the ocean. It borders four countries. One of them is the Kingdom of Lasiar, where we’re from. The Kingdom of Lasiar is north of the forest. The other countries are… to the west of the Kingdom of Lasiar, bordering the northwest part of the forest, is the Kingdom of Jamul. South of the Kingdom of Jamul, bordering the west side of the forest, is the Derval Empire. And bordering the south side of the forest is the Kingdom of Dirdilis.”
That’s a lot of names…
So, the forest was surrounded by four countries and the ocean to the east.
“If it borders four countries, then this forest must be huge, right?”
“Hmm, I don’t know how big it is. No one can explore it…”
“That’s true. Then what about these four countries, what are they like?”
“The Kingdom of Lasiar is mainly inhabited by humans. Other humanoid races also live there, or visit. But the only places I know are the capital and Canaan Village.”
“So they don’t discriminate against non-human races.”
“No. That would be the Derval Empire. I heard they say that beastmen, elves, and demons are the same as magical beasts and monsters. Non-humans can’t become citizens of the empire. I heard they are allowed in as slaves, though…”
Hmm, so there was racial discrimination and slavery in this world too…
Kaito continued to explain, recalling what he had learned as a noble about these four countries.
The Kingdom of Lasiar was… well, an ordinary country. It bordered the ocean to the north and east, so fishing and salt production were its main industries. They seemed to export a lot of salt. But in recent years, the Kingdom of Jamul, which was also located to the west, bordering the northern part of the ocean, had advanced its salt production technology, and the Kingdom of Lasiar was losing market share.
The Kingdom of Jamul was known for salt production and agriculture.
The Derval Empire, a human supremacist nation, was what you would call a military state. Despite being surrounded by other nations, it was always looking for opportunities to expand its territory.
However, it didn’t share a border with Kaito’s country, the Kingdom of Lasiar, so it wasn’t considered a threat. To wage war against Lasiar, the empire would have to go through the Kingdom of Jamul or the Great Forest of Chrys.
And the Kingdom of Dirdilis. It was a multiracial nation where many humanoids lived, including beastmen, elves, demons, and humans.
However, it was located south of the forest, directly south of the Kingdom of Lasiar. There was no interaction between the two countries, as they would have to cross the ocean. Information about the Kingdom of Dirdilis was scarce.
Label hadn’t paid much attention to world affairs, and even when he was summoned, he completed his tasks and left before even learning which country he was in, so he didn’t know any more than Kaito.
Hmm, so we could visit any of the three countries except for the Derval Empire.
But where exactly were we in the forest?
“The base is located in the northern part of the Great Forest of Chrys. Based on what Kaito-sama just said, the Kingdom of Lasiar is probably the closest.”
“Hmm, Lasiar? The country that mistreated Kaito and Pola?”
“…Well, yeah, but I think it’s our best option. It would probably be fine even if it came out that Onee-chan isn’t human. I don’t really care about countries anymore anyway…”
“I see. You said Canaan Village was near the edge of the forest, right, Kaito?”
“Yeah. The area near the forest on the Lasiar side is the territory of Margrave Baiz. The capital of his territory is a large fortress city, and Canaan Village is located near it. The river we were swept down is also nearby.”
“There is only one river flowing into the forest from the north side, and it doesn’t branch off, so if you follow it, you’ll eventually reach the vicinity of that village.”
Hmm.
I had no desire to visit that village that had mistreated Kaito and Pola, so I guess we would go to that margrave’s capital.
But could we just walk in?
“Would I be able to enter the capital?”
“It’s usually the first big city people from Canaan Village and other rural villages visit, so I think they let you in even if you don’t have any identification. But it will probably cost a silver coin or so to enter.”
“Like a tax? …But we don’t have any money, not even a silver coin. Should we sell some Fangrabbit meat?”
“…I’m sure you could sell it, but people will be like, ‘Who are you?!’”
“Yeah, you’re right… How many silver coins would we get for it?”
“…Well, I don’t know. Fangrabbits are rarely sold. I imagine they would go for hundreds of gold coins at an auction.”
…No way, even those rabbits were that valuable?
If the rabbits were out of the question, then 『Amaju Fruits』 were definitely out of the question too…
“I think it would be better to sell some 『Cell Fruits』.”
“Would 『Cell Fruits』 be okay?”
“Yeah. The Kingdom of Lasiar can make salt from seawater, but people who live far from the sea still use fruits like 『Cell Fruits』 to make salt. 『Cell Fruits』 are sometimes used as ingredients for high-grade salt, so bringing them into the city wouldn’t be too suspicious. Just say you found them in the forest.”
“I see. Well then, maybe we should bring some 『Cell Fruits』, exchange them for money, and then visit the town.”
