Chapter 28: Let’s Fight
My hand, which I swung down with all my might towards the Blackera’s face, didn’t connect.
At the last moment, the Blackera brought its left arm up to protect its face. Four deep gashes, oozing blood, marred its arm.
I landed right in front of the Blackera, then immediately kicked off the ground again, jumping back to create distance.
“GYURAAAAAAA!!!”
The Blackera roared, its voice shaking the very earth.
Was it in pain? Was it angry?
Having acknowledged me as an enemy, the Blackera tossed aside the Forest Tiger carcass it had been holding in its right hand and brought both hands to its chest. It roared again, beating its chest repeatedly.
……It was the gorilla’s signature threat display, chest-beating.
Yep, this thing really was a gorilla.
And it had decided I was an enemy.
Well, that’s to be expected. It was just enjoying its meal, and then, out of nowhere, it got attacked…
I fired a volley of 『Stone Bullets』 at the Blackera to distract it, waiting for an opportunity to approach.
They were more powerful than usual since I had 『Dragon Transformation』 activated and my horns were out, but rapid-fire attacks still weakened their power.
I took small steps, moving quickly around the Blackera with my 『Dragon Transformation』 legs, but I couldn’t find an opening.
The Blackera, despite its large size, was fast.
I couldn’t tell how large it was from a distance, but it was about the size of a two-story house.
Why was everything in this forest so damn huge?!
I screamed internally and decided to change my tactics.
I tried blasting it with a torrent of water using 『Water Magic』 and shining a bright light in its face with 『Light Magic』.
But I couldn’t distract it.
The moment I stopped casting magic, the Blackera swung its thick arm down at me with all its might, but I easily dodged it with a sidestep.
Still, the force of the swing was incredible. The ground where its arm struck cracked and caved in. If that hit connected, I wouldn’t stand a chance.
♢ ♢ ♢
We had been fighting for about 10 minutes.
The same pattern continued: I fired magic, the Blackera deflected it and then attacked me with its arms.
The only thing that had changed was that the Blackera’s movements were getting a little slower.
I was mostly just firing magic. I was able to easily dodge the Blackera’s attacks.
The Blackera, on the other hand, had to put its entire body into each swing.
There was also the impact from hitting the ground, and it had been hit by a large number of stone bullets and ice projectiles, even though they hadn’t been very effective.
……Time to charge.
I created a bright ball of light with 『Light Magic』 and hurled it at the Blackera’s face to blind it. Then, without missing a beat, I fired a volley of smaller than usual stone bullets at its left arm, the one I had injured earlier.
The Blackera’s attacks were mainly with both arms, but the attacks with its left arm had been weaker, and it would cry out in pain after each swing.
It must still be hurting. I decided to focus my attacks on its left arm.
Several of the stone bullets struck the wound, and the Blackera roared in pain, hunching over protectively.
…Now’s my chance!
The moment the Blackera hunched over, I kicked off the ground with all my might, leaping towards its face.
And this time, I punched down with all my might.
The Blackera barely reacted in time to defend itself, and its face slammed into the ground.
As soon as I landed, I jumped up again and delivered a heel drop to the back of the Blackera’s head.
The Blackera, which had been trying to get up, was slammed back into the ground. It stopped moving.
…Was it down?
That was easier than I expected.
Well, it was good that I got to practice my moves.
As I was thinking about releasing 『Dragon Transformation』, a strange sensation washed over me.
It felt like something cold was coursing through my body.
Instinctively, I leaped backward, creating distance between me and the Blackera.
The Blackera, supporting itself on its arms, raised its upper body and opened its mouth wide.
A white light was converging in front of the Blackera’s open mouth.
I instantly understood and thrust both arms out in front of me… At the same moment, the white light shot forward, towards me…
The light struck my outstretched hands, then split in two, arcing behind me and obliterating the trees in its path.
I felt a pressure pushing against my hands.
And since the Blackera’s mouth was still glowing, I knew what was happening.
It was shooting a beam of light from its mouth, just like a monster from a kaiju movie.
…That was… possible?!
As I internally screamed, I desperately braced against the beam.
Fortunately, I didn’t feel any pain. I was just slowly being pushed back.
But what about my 『Automatic Defense』?! I didn’t hear it break?!
I didn’t know how much time had passed since the Blackera started shooting its beam.
I didn’t have the luxury of keeping track of time.
I peeked at the Blackera through the beam and saw that it was struggling.
I must have dealt a significant amount of damage, and it probably wasn’t easy to shoot a beam this powerful.
But I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even cast magic.
I briefly considered unleashing my full power, activating 『Dragon Transformation』, growing my horns, focusing my will, and blasting it with my strongest magic. But I was afraid to move the hands that were currently protecting me.
The stalemate continued, but it was the Blackera that made the next move.
It shifted its beam, aiming it at the ground just in front of me.
The ground exploded on impact. Chunks of earth were blasted towards me, and a huge cloud of dust erupted.
I instinctively turned my face away, keeping my hands up.
I heard heavy footsteps.
…Shit!
I thought and turned back around, but the Blackera was gone. All that remained was a crater in the ground where the beam had struck, and another hole where the Blackera had been standing.
…………Did it… run away?
Why? It had a perfect opportunity to attack me while I had turned my face away…
…No, that wasn’t it.
That beam just now, that was its strongest attack.
It had seen me block it with my hands and had given up. So it created a distraction with the beam and escaped while I couldn’t see.
“Whew… I’m… exhausted.”
I muttered, collapsing to the ground.
I didn’t seem to be injured.
That beam… I had panicked at first, but in the end, I was able to block it with my hands and deflect it.
Though the trees behind me were gone.
Rin, as if to say, “Are you okay?”, hopped over to me and started circling me.
“…I’m okay, Rin. Just a little tired.”
So, for now, I would consider this fight a victory for me. The Blackera escaped — well, retreated.
But I was able to withstand the attack that one-shotted the Greymlad Viper, and the Blackera was barely affected by my magic, even with 『Dragon Transformation』 activated, although I had focused on quantity over power.
“Next time, I’ll defeat you for sure…”
Perhaps I was frustrated that I had let prey escape for the first time. I muttered those words without thinking.
And then, from somewhere, I heard a voice.
“That was impressive.”
Someone was talking to me…
