Chapter 25: Let’s Build a Base 3
The next day, we started working on the exterior of the cave, specifically the rocky mountain and the surrounding area.
First, I created a stairway from the open area in front of the cave entrance leading down the cliff.
This time, instead of the simple steps I usually made, I would create a proper staircase.
First, I used 『Earth Magic』 to create a slope leading down from the open area.
Then, I transformed the slope into stairs. I made each step wide to prevent Pola from tripping and falling if she ran.
I had created a slope first and then transformed it into stairs because it was easier to create a clean, well-defined shape that way. When creating something large, it was difficult to imagine all the details from the start. Therefore, it was easier and more efficient to create a rough outline, like a frame, and then reshape it.
Once the steps were complete, I created handrails.
I had chosen a spot at the base of the cliff where there weren’t any trees as the end point for the stairs, which had resulted in a slightly steeper incline.
This was the path that led to our “home,” and we would be going up and down it every day, so I wanted to make it as comfortable as possible.
It took about two hours to create the handrails, reinforce the stairs, and make some minor adjustments to the angle.
Kaito helped me with the 『Earth Magic』. Pola was organizing the pantry and the treasure room, where we had dumped everything randomly yesterday.
Rin was…… watching the stairs take shape, jiggling happily…
Now that the stairs were complete, it was time to work on the open area in front of the cave entrance. I would call this our “entranceway”.
We’ll prepare this place.
…But I didn’t really have any ideas for it.
For now, I created a fence around the edges of the platform to prevent anyone from falling. We wouldn’t be dismantling this, so I made it solid.
I would seal off the entrance to the stairs with 『Earth Magic』 whenever we left the cave.
I leveled the ground of the “entranceway”, created chairs and a table, and a simple cooking stove, and a thin stone slab and base for grilling meat.
Controlling the heat when grilling meat on a stone slab was quite difficult. Ideally, I wanted a metal griddle.
And I wanted to test my hypothesis that I could also manipulate metals with 『Earth Magic』.
…I thought about venturing out to a place we had never been before after we finished remodeling our base.
Once the “entranceway” was finished, it was time to work on the area at the base of the stairs, the area around the rocky mountain.
…But first, I would collect the Greymlad Viper’s acid and venom sacs I had stored there as a precaution yesterday.
But I was still apprehensive about bringing them into the cave.
What should I do…?
As I was thinking about this, Rin jumped in front of me.
“…Rin? What’s wrong?”
Rin hopped around the box containing the acid and venom sacs.
“……Don’t tell me, you want these?”
“Yes!” I felt a sense of affirmation from Rin.
………Hmm, Rin knew what these were, right? It was asking for them, which meant… they were food for it?
…No, that couldn’t be right, could it?
Acid and venom? Or did slimes eat acid and venom?
“…Umm, Rin? These are the acid and venom sacs from that Greymlad Viper we fought. Are you going to eat them?”
“Not eat!” Rin conveyed.
“……Not eat them? Then why do you want them?”
“Stronger!” It conveyed this time.
…Hmm, I didn’t understand.
But it was the first time Rin had asked for something, and I couldn’t think of any other use for them, so… I guess it was fine?
“…Alright, but Rin? Don’t do anything dangerous, okay?”
I opened the box and placed it in front of Rin.
Rin hopped right in.
“Hey! Rin?!”
I was startled. I looked inside the box, but Rin had already absorbed the acid and venom sacs.
………Umm, was that okay?
I observed Rin closely, but it was just jiggling as usual.
There were no signs of it being dissolved by the acid or poisoned by the venom.
Relieved, I asked Rin.
“…Rin? I think you’re okay, but… what are you doing?”
“Watch!” Rin conveyed, then hopped off in the direction of the forest.
I followed Rin and found it standing in front of a tree a short distance from the rocky mountain.
“Rin? What are you…”
Before I could finish my question, Rin shot something at the tree.
The moment it hit the tree, the spot started turning purple.
And then, within minutes, the tree snapped in half at the discolored spot.
“…What? Is it… melting? No, maybe it’s rotting?”
Rin then shot something at a large rock embedded in the ground nearby.
This time, there was a hissing sound, and the rock started melting, bubbling and frothing.
“Umm, what’s going on? The tree was probably rotting, but that rock is definitely melting.”
Rotting liquid and melting liquid.
…Ah, I think I get it.
I appraised Rin to confirm.
♢ ♢ ♢
Name: Rin
Race: Origin Slime
Skills: 『Absorption』 4
Innate Skills: 『Shape-shifting』, 『Minor Auto-recovery』
Unique Skills: 『Intermediate Magic Box』, 『Acid Generation & Projection』, 『Venom Generation & Projection』
Resistance: 『Magic Attack Resistance』 3
Title: Kotoha Mizuhara’s Familiar
♢ ♢ ♢
Yep, just as I thought.
As expected, two new skills had been added: 『Acid Generation & Projection』 and 『Venom Generation & Projection』.
Rin could probably create acid and venom inside its body and use them to attack.
“…Is that why it wanted those sacs so badly? Because it was a chance to gain new attack methods…?”
I muttered this thought aloud.
“No! I wanted to be helpful to Kotoha!” Rin conveyed.
…So cute.
But Rin’s growth was definitely going to be helpful.
Acid and venom.
We were currently building our base and trying to prevent magical beasts from getting in.
The acid could be used to melt troublesome rocks, and the venom could be used to take down trees.
…Well, I could do that with magic too. But I could clearly foresee a future where I misjudged the amount of power needed and destroyed more than I intended.
And both could be used for traps.
Magical beasts caught in acid or venom traps wouldn’t be good for food or materials, but it would be an effective way to protect our defenses.
Right, I had to remember to thank Rin and praise it.
“Rin! That’s amazing! There are so many things we can do now thanks to you! Thank you!!”
Rin and I were connected, so I could communicate with it without speaking. But I felt it was important to verbally express my gratitude and praise.
Rin jiggled happily.
