Chapter 24: Let’s Build a Base 2
I decided to start with remodeling the rocky mountain and the cave.
I stood at the back of the cave, facing the wall, and activated 『Earth Magic』.
I had Kaito handle the detailed work, like shaping and reinforcing the walls, while I took care of the large-scale reshaping.
Pola, who couldn’t use 『Earth Magic』, gathered the loose dirt into a pile. We would dispose of it all later.
I decided to keep the ceiling at about two meters high. We didn’t need it to be too tall, and I was worried about the structural integrity of the cave if I made the hole too big. It felt a little cramped, but it was better than getting buried alive.
Anyway, I focused on making the walls and ceiling as “hard, hard” as possible to increase their strength.
I dug about 20 meters straight back from our current living space.
I created a passageway, then dug out rooms for Kaito and Pola on either side. They weren’t really rooms, just three-tatami-mat-sized alcoves branching off from the central passage. I used 『Earth Magic』 to create a wall that blocked off about half of the entrance.
I wasn’t sure if they could be considered rooms, but both Kaito and Pola seemed to be pleased with them, so it was all good.
By the way, both Kaito and Pola still wanted to sleep together with me, so I created a space for myself at the end of the extended passageway and a room with beds for the three of us.
Expanding the back of the cave was relatively easy.
Sunlight didn’t reach the back of the cave, so Pola and I installed lights using 『Light Magic』.
I could imagine things like light bulbs that stayed lit continuously, so the lights I created lasted a long time, but the only thing Pola could imagine was the sun. As a result, the lights she created disappeared after a few hours.
To make sure it didn’t become completely dark, I created large lights in the center of the passageway and in the middle of each room, then Pola created smaller lights in various locations.
It might have been easier for me to do it all myself, but Pola wanted to help, and it wouldn’t be good for her development if I did everything for her.
And I suspected the lights Pola created would last longer as she practiced.
Besides, the more you use magic, the higher its level goes.
Up to level 3, the effects of my magic had expanded with each level up, but after reaching level 4, even with 『Appraisal』, there wasn’t anything new I could do.
I couldn’t think of anything else I could do beyond what I could already do at level 3…
However, reaching levels 4 and 5 had significantly increased the power and precision of my magic.
It seemed that leveling up beyond 4 just increased my proficiency.
Once the back of the cave was expanded, I started working on creating a pantry and a treasure room underground — well, the cave was located about 10 meters above ground, so it was debatable whether it could be called “underground”.
…We didn’t really have any treasure, but it was where we kept the important things, so I wanted to call it a treasure room.
Creating it was simple: I used 『Earth Magic』 to carry away soil from the ground, digging a slanted hole.
After digging diagonally for a few meters, I created a rectangular space.
It was about 2 meters high, 4 meters wide, and 10 meters deep.
Just like before, I reinforced the walls, making them as solid as possible.
Once the space was complete, I created slabs of ice with 『Water Magic』 and lined the walls with them.
I used 『Earth Magic』 to seal the entrance and created stairs in the slanted hole for easy access.
I actually wanted to make a door, but I didn’t have the skills to do so, so I gave up.
It was a bit of a hassle, but it was important to seal the entrance to the refrigeration room, so I decided to seal it with 『Earth Magic』 every time we went in or out.
I then created the treasure room in the same way. This one didn’t need ice slabs, but I sealed off the entrance, just like a real treasure vault.
Kaito used 『Earth Magic』 to create shelves along the ice slabs in the pantry and on the wall of the treasure room.
This was where we would store our food, magic stones, and other items.
I created entrances to the pantry and the treasure room in the space at the back of our original living area.
We planned to use this space as our living room, a place to relax and do various tasks.
However, we would continue to butcher the magical beasts outside because of the smell, and we would also make salt from the 『Cell Fruits』 outside because we needed to heat them with fire, and we didn’t want the cave to fill with smoke.
So we couldn’t really think of many uses for the living room. Maybe just eating meals?
I wanted to create some everyday items to improve our lives, and I also wanted Kaito to teach me more about this world. I wanted to teach Pola too.
But unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to do that right now.
After we finished building our base, I thought we might venture out further to search for materials for clothes and ore for making metal tools.
My current goal was to completely free Kaito and Pola from food procurement duties.
I decided to use this opportunity to level the ground and reinforce the walls of the passage from the cave entrance to the living room.
The cave entrance was quite large, and I didn’t want any large magical beasts to be able to get in.
And even though I hadn’t seen them properly yet, there were huge birds flying around above the forest — there seemed to be various types besides the two-headed ones I had seen earlier.
I wanted to prevent them from landing on the platform in front of the cave and peering inside, so I created solid walls to seal off the entrance, leaving only a small space for us to pass through.
We would use 『Earth Magic』 to open and close this entrance every time we went in and out.
It was a bit of a hassle, but it was for our safety.
The sun was beginning to set.
It was time to call it a day.
We managed to complete the interior construction of the cave in one day. We were making good progress.
Kaito and Pola were decorating their rooms with their favorite things.
Kaito displayed a Forest Tiger’s fang.
Pola displayed the magic stones from the Fangrabbits she had defeated.
I was glad they liked their rooms.
