A Side Story: My Mysterious Onee-chan
She really is a mysterious person. Or rather, to be blunt, she’s weird.
My name is Kaito.
A precious, precious name given to me by my onee-chan, Kotoha-san.
Onee-chan told me to “stop speaking so formally,” but I couldn’t immediately change the way I spoke. I’m trying my best to use casual speech when talking to her.
After we finish dinner and clean up, we go to the back of the cave to rest.
I close my eyes as I lie down on the bed Onee-chan made for me.
…And I remember the day we met her. It hasn’t been long since we met Onee-chan, but it’s already a precious, nostalgic memory.
♢ ♢ ♢
I first met Onee-chan deep within the Great Forest of Chrys.
My little sister, Pola, and I had been banished from our village, sent down the river, and washed ashore.
We were walking along the riverbank, looking for other people or something to eat, when we came to a large clearing.
As we stepped into the clearing, a huge magical beast emerged from the other side.
It was probably a Forest Tiger. It was a dangerous magical beast known for killing many people with its massive body, powerful attacks, and skillful use of magic. They say a single one of them could destroy entire towns and villages.
And now, one was standing right before us…
I tried to steady my trembling legs, desperately pushing Pola behind me as I faced the Forest Tiger. But I couldn’t move another inch. For some reason, the Forest Tiger was just staring at us, motionless. Maybe it had never left the Great Forest of Chrys before, which meant it had never seen a… human.
…It felt like we had been staring at each other for several minutes, or maybe only a few seconds.
I had to do something to distract the Forest Tiger so Pola at least could escape…
As I was thinking this, I heard a loud voice, “Wall of Fire!”
A huge wall of fire erupted between us and the Forest Tiger.
It looked like 『Fire Magic』, and a powerful one at that, similar to the 『Fire Wall』 spell used by advanced mages.
But this one was much larger than any magic I had ever seen, and even from this distance, I could feel the heat.
As we stared at the wall of fire in shock, we heard a voice shout, “This way!! Run!!”
I turned towards the voice and saw a woman standing there.
I didn’t have time to think, but I understood that she was trying to help us. I forced Pola, who had collapsed to the ground, to her feet, and we ran towards the woman.
As we ran, the woman shouted something again, and another wall of fire appeared between her and the Forest Tiger.
When we reached her, she said, “Come on! Follow me!”
She picked up Pola, who was too scared to move, and we ran into the forest.
After running for a while, a large rocky mountain came into view.
She suddenly created a staircase leading up the mountain.
…Was that magic? She muttered something, but I didn’t hear any chanting. We had learned that chanting long spells was necessary to use magic. Only 『Demons』 or incredibly powerful mages could use magic without chanting.
Was she an incredibly powerful mage?
But she looked very young. A little older than me, maybe around the same age as the maids who worked at the mansion.
Her beautiful black hair flowed a little past her shoulders, and she was taller than me. She had a very feminine figure, with slender arms and legs. And she was beautiful. Her skin was flawless, her lips were small, her nose was delicate, and she had large black eyes. I had rarely seen people with black eyes, but hers were beautiful. I thought she was even more beautiful than the princess I had met once.
She didn’t have the long ears that were characteristic of elves, so maybe she was a demon?
…Well, whoever she was, she had saved us.
We climbed the stairs she had created and entered the cave where she lived.
Pola was already asleep. My sister was always good at judging people. In the village, she would avoid people who were violent or gossiped about others.
And she was comfortable enough to fall asleep in this woman’s arms, so she must be a good person.
…And that’s how we were rescued by this woman, Kotoha-onee-chan. She gave us names and we started living with her.
What happened after that was a series of surprises.
She ate 『Amaju Fruits』, legendary fruits, for breakfast and dessert.
She defeated Forest Tigers and Fangrabbits with a single blow.
She used all sorts of magic without chanting.
She could use the rare skill 『Appraisal』, and apparently, she could even see people’s statuses with it.
I was surprised when she said Pola and I could use magic too. Though, Pola seemed to be better at it than me.
She even had a slime, a rather weak but troublesome monster, as her familiar. I heard familiar contracts were very difficult magic.
It’s only been a few days since we started living with Onee-chan, but there’s been one surprise after another.
And Onee-chan didn’t know a lot of things that seemed like common sense.
She didn’t know about the 『Amaju Fruits』, the magical beasts she had defeated, or magic in general.
She said she was a 『Dragon Demon』. I had never heard of that race before.
♢ ♢ ♢
Thinking back to everything that’s happened since I met Onee-chan, it all seems like a dream.
But she’s someone precious to us, someone who saved our lives and is now taking care of us.
I can’t do much for her right now besides help with butchering the magical beasts she hunts, but I want to be more helpful.
I want to be able to fight too, if possible.
I get scared seeing a beautiful woman like Onee-chan fighting dangerous magical beasts.
But I’m still too weak. I’m not good at magic. I need to become stronger to protect Onee-chan.
