Chapter 11: Let’s Try Various Things
“……………Heh?”
A dumbfounded sound escaped my lips.
Wasn’t that a little too powerful?
It went straight through the Forest Tiger and even blew away the tree behind it…
“Kotoha-nee-chan, that’s amazing!!”
Pola cheered with pure admiration.
Her voice brought me back to my senses.
…Kaito was staring at me in shock, as always.
The Forest Tiger showed no signs of movement.
Well, half of its head was blown off, so it was obviously dead…
“…I wonder if tigers are edible?”
I muttered this thought aloud, and Kaito immediately stopped me.
“It’s probably edible, but it would take forever to butcher. And we wouldn’t be able to carry it back to the cave. We should just give up on that…”
“Yeah, you’re right. It would be nice to at least get the fur and fangs since they might be useful…”
“Ah, if that’s all, I think we can do that. The meat of a large magical beast that has just died is still quite tough, so butchering the whole thing would take a lot of time. But I think I can skin it and remove the fangs and claws. We should be able to collect the magic stone too. You, um, blew off part of its body along with the head, so the magic stone is visible…”
“Oh! Okay then, let’s just collect those!”
“Okay!”
“Alright!”
With that, Kaito used the Fangrabbit’s fang as a makeshift knife to expertly skin the Forest Tiger, removing its fangs, claws, and magic stone.
Kaito even knew how to process the hide, which he did for us.
Kaito was too capable.
Pola helped by gathering the fangs, claws, and pieces that had been cut off.
I couldn’t help with the butchering, so I kept watch to make sure no other magical beasts attacked us.
The Fangrabbit’s magic stone had been about the size of my fist, but the Forest Tiger’s magic stone was as big as a bowling ball.
It was huge and heavy.
We decided to return to the cave with the fur, fangs, claws, and magic stone we had collected.
I wasn’t sure if I could call it “hunting”, but it was a bit inconvenient to have to return to the cave every time we got something.
…But we couldn’t just leave it in the forest.
Thinking this, the three of us worked together to carry everything back to the cave.
♢ ♢ ♢
Back in the cave, we put the materials we collected from the Forest Tiger next to where we were keeping the Fangrabbit’s magic stone.
After eating some 『Amaju Fruits』, we ventured back into the forest.
It seemed like magical beasts gathered near water sources, so we decided to avoid heading in the direction of the river.
Drinking water could be managed with magic, so going to the river wasn’t a necessity.
We decided to head in a direction we hadn’t explored yet, to the area behind the cliff where the cave entrance was located.
Just in case we encountered any dangerous magical beasts, we decided to stay relatively close to the cliff so we could easily escape back to the cave.
After walking for a while, Pola brought me a marble-sized fruit she had found.
I appraised it.
♢ ♢ ♢
『Cell Fruit』
Fruit that grows on the Cell tree. Rich in salt to protect the seed in its center.
♢ ♢ ♢
“…『Cell Fruit』huh.”
“『Cell Fruit』?!”
As usual, Kaito reacted with surprise.
He explained that if you peel the skin, crush the flesh, remove the seed in the center, and boil down the remaining flesh, you can extract salt.
“…Salt, huh. I was craving something salty…
Can you make salt from these fruits, Kaito?”
“Yeah. 『Cell Fruits』 yield a lot of salt, but there are other fruits that can be processed in the same way. I’ve done it before.”
“…Okay then. Let’s gather some Cell Fruits!”
“Okay!”
“Alright!”
Kaito, Pola, and I gathered 『Cell Fruits』.
I asked Pola where she found it, then we searched the surrounding area and were able to find several more trees bearing them.
Just like with the 『Amaju Fruits』, I created stairs to help us reach the fruit.
We filled an earthen box I made with 『Earth Magic』 with 『Cell Fruits』 and continued to explore the surrounding area.
But unfortunately, we couldn’t find anything else that seemed edible.
Foraging for food in the forest was harder than I thought…
I decided to have Kaito and Pola head back to the cave to start making salt while I continued searching for more food.
I made some bowls for crushing the fruit, a pot for boiling them, and a container for storing the extracted salt. I also gathered some firewood for them.
I told Kaito and Pola to use 『Water Magic』 to fill the pot with water.
I demonstrated 『Water Magic』 for them, telling them to visualize what I had just done.
They held their hands over the pot, concentrating with furrowed brows, and shouted, “Water!”
Water streamed from their palms and into the pot.
“Yay! I did it!”
Pola cheered, and Kaito smiled as he looked at the pot.
I told them to keep at it and left them to boil the 『Cell Fruits』.
…They were both incredibly talented…

Meanwhile, I decided to practice magic while I looked for more food.
I had been fortunate with that Forest Tiger. 『Automatic Defense』 had activated properly, and my earth projectile had luckily hit its mark. It was pure luck.
I didn’t know if it was the same tiger that attacked Kaito and Pola yesterday, but the possibility of encountering it again in the future was not low.
And there could be other dangerous magical beasts besides Forest Tigers.
…Actually, there definitely were. The Great Forest of Chrys was said to be dangerous, and I had already encountered so many monstrous creatures in just three days since being reborn. It was best to assume I would continue to encounter more.
With that in mind, I decided to venture a bit deeper into the forest, past where we had found the 『Cell Fruits』.
