Chapter 20: If You Want, You Can Take It Away Anytime
“Alright!”
No one had any objections to what the old lady said, after all, it had been a long time since they had seen each other.
Qi Yue never expected that he would have to stay overnight, but even if he just changed beds to sleep, it wasn’t a big deal.
After dinner, Shen Kuozhi was summoned by Shen Tan to the study, leaving Qi Yue surrounded by people from the Shen family.
However, Grandma Shen and Meng Jiang actually allowed the three young people to go and play without bothering about them.
Qi Yue didn’t want to get too involved with the other members of the Shen family, nor did he feel the need to get too familiar.
After Grandma Shen let him go after dinner, he went for a stroll in the courtyard.
Shen Mengyu stayed in the living room with Grandma Shen and Meng Jiang, while Shen Hanxin, not one to miss out on anything, quickly caught up with Qi Yue.
“Little Qi, I’ll accompany you!”
Shen Hanxin, still being his usual self, walked briskly up to Qi Yue and walked alongside him.
“You haven’t been here much before, but from now on, you’re part of our Shen family. Let me show you around our old house.”
Shen Hanxin glanced at Qi Yue and said with a smile.
That wasn’t wrong; Qi Yue couldn’t refuse.
“Thank you…”
“Just call me Second Brother, like Xiao Zhi does. Hehe~”
Shen Hanxin was Shen Tan’s eldest son and ranked second among the siblings in the Shen family. It was natural to call him Second Brother, although Shen Kuozhi didn’t seem to call him that.
“Okay.”
Qi Yue didn’t refuse, but simply nodded without any further expression.
Shen Hanxin didn’t fuss about titles too much either. After entering the courtyard, he began to recount the stories that had happened there to Qi Yue.
“This courtyard is remarkable; it’s where our Shen family started. The feng shui here is excellent. We siblings grew up playing here.”
“Thinking back to when I was in junior high and Xiao Zhi was still in elementary school, his health wasn’t great at the time, so he couldn’t play the games we played. He’d just watch us eagerly from the sidelines. I used to tease him a lot, haha~”
With his hands behind his back, Shen Hanxin spoke of their childhood with a smile on his face.
“Among the siblings, I love teasing Xiao Zhi the most, haha~ No wonder he always opposes me when we grow up.”
Although the Shen family courtyard was quite large, it felt spacious and comfortable to walk in, not tiring at all, and didn’t feel too large.
“I didn’t expect this rocking horse to still be here.”
Turning a corner, there were things for children to play with, such as swings and chess tables.
Shen Hanxin whistled and, feeling excited, even sat on the rocking horse for a while.
“This was made by several of us siblings together. Xiao Zhi was the youngest. Originally, it was made for him to play with, but he was like a little adult back then and thought it was too childish, haha~”
Shen Hanxin sat on the rocking horse and rocked it a few times, then looked at Qi Yue.
It was Shen Hanxin who spoke throughout, but he didn’t find it boring or awkward.
Perhaps what he needed now was just a listener.
Seeing Shen Hanxin like this, Qi Yue felt that the relationship between them seemed harmonious.
But if what Shen Hanxin said was true, then what did Shen Kuozhi’s previous words mean?
Qi Yue didn’t understand the complex internal relationships of wealthy families, so he had no right to judge, just observe.
“Do you still want to walk around?”
After standing up, Shen Hanxin didn’t look at Qi Yue and asked softly.
Seeing this scene, Qi Yue guessed that he probably didn’t want to walk around anymore, so he replied, “Let’s go back.”
“Then you go back first, I’ll stroll around a bit more.”
“Okay, I’ll go back first.”
“Yeah, see you later.”
Before Qi Yue left, he glanced in the direction of Shen Hanxin. Although he couldn’t see his face clearly, Qi Yue seemed to see a faint glint reflecting on Shen Hanxin’s face.
On his way back, he happened to meet Shen Kuozhi coming to find him.
“Going back?”
“Yeah, I was just about to.”
“Don’t hurry back. I’ll take you somewhere.”
Without asking further, Shen Kuozhi raised his right hand to the side as if to hold the hand of the person next to him, but eventually, he withdrew it.
Although Qi Yue didn’t know what Shen Kuozhi wanted to do, he nodded obediently.
Shen Kuozhi almost couldn’t resist reaching out to hold the hand of the person beside him, who was slightly younger than him, but his reason told him that it wasn’t the right time yet, and it might scare the person away.
While Shen Hanxin took Qi Yue to the south earlier, this time Shen Kuozhi took him to the east.
They didn’t walk far before they reached the end, where there was a one-story delicate house.
“This is where I study. Maybe you’ll like it here more than being with them.”
Shen Kuozhi took a step forward and unlocked the door with his fingerprint.
“Come in and take a look.”
After Qi Yue entered, he was surprised by the collection of books inside.
Shen Kuozhi had been watching Qi Yue’s reaction all along. When he saw Qi Yue’s eyes widen slightly, emitting a gleam of surprise, his mouth quickly curled up.
He knew that Yue Yue would like it.
“You can read any of these. If you like any, you can take them with you.”
Qi Yue nodded reservedly, but his eyes completely betrayed him.
The two of them read here, and time passed unnoticed.
When Shen Kuozhi’s phone rang for who knows how many times, he skillfully hung up the call and said to Qi Yue, who was quietly reading nearby, “Yue… Yue Yue, it’s getting late. Let’s go back. If you like any, take them with you.”
Lost in the world of books, Qi Yue didn’t notice anything wrong in Shen Kuozhi’s words. He casually responded, but his body remained still, honest.
Shen Kuozhi looked helplessly at the beautiful person in front of him. He had already been away from home for so long, which wasn’t easy to explain to his grandmother. Now, it seemed like Yue Yue wanted to stay here directly.
“Let’s go.”
This sentence was spoken so close to Qi Yue that he could feel Shen Kuozhi’s breath clearly on his skin.
Qi Yue shivered slightly from the sensation, feeling ticklish.
Only then did he look up at Shen Kuozhi with a hint of displeasure in his eyes.
There was both grievance and anger in his eyes.
“Alright, it’s getting late. Shall we go back?”
Suppressing his amusement, Shen Kuozhi looked at Qi Yue affectionately and said gently.
Qi Yue glanced at the time before realizing that nearly two hours had passed since they arrived here, so it was indeed getting late.
Reluctantly, he placed the bookmark in the book and blinked at Shen Kuozhi, his voice unintentionally soft.
“Okay, let’s go, but I’m taking the book with me. You said I could take it earlier.”
“Yes, you can take it. You can take any book you like from this room, read whatever you want, whenever you want. I’ll record your fingerprint.”
“No need, I’ll just borrow this book.”
Qi Yue thought Shen Kuozhi was joking and didn’t take it seriously.
After all, what kind of relationship did they have? He didn’t feel comfortable infringing on the other’s private property.
Shen Kuozhi didn’t say anything, just led Qi Yue to the door.
He directly brought up the window for recording new fingerprints, held Qi Yue’s hand, and without waiting for his reaction, placed it on the recording device.
The whole action was completed in one go, without giving Qi Yue a chance to react, and the fingerprint was already recorded.
“I won’t go back on my promise. Just keep it. No need to be polite with me. After all, we’re long-term partners, aren’t we?”
“Um, okay.”
Qi Yue nodded dazedly. There seemed to be nothing wrong with what he said, but something felt off.
“Let’s go. Grandma must be anxious.”
After they returned, the two of them were greeted by four pairs of eyes.
Except for Shen Tan, everyone else was in the living room.
As soon as they entered, they were bombarded with comments.
“Brother Kuozhi, although sister understands your excitement about having a new partner, can you please restrain yourself a bit in the old house?”
Shen Mengyu covered her mouth, smiling.
“I took Yue Yue around the house. Besides, you’re all here with Grandma, right? Grandma doesn’t mind, does she, Grandma?”
Shen Kuozhi wasn’t embarrassed at all. With Grandma backing him up, he could say or do anything.
“Alright, alright, it’s not a big deal to be a bit clingy. Kuozhi and Yue Yue, come over here to Grandma.”
Grandma Shen smiled and patted the sofa next to her, looking kindly at them.
When she was young, Grandma Shen was a tough woman, but after knowing her fate, she started to live a comfortable retired life.
However, Grandma Shen couldn’t rest assured about her grandson with the weakest health. His condition had not improved significantly over the years but rather worsened.
Shen Kuozhi, a person with a strong sense of self-esteem, was able to listen to the advice of fortune telling and had really started talking about marriage. His health seemed to have improved somewhat. It seemed that fortune telling had some use after all.
Now that Grandma Shen’s only concern had been mostly resolved, she wouldn’t mistreat her new grandson-in-law.
Shen Kuozhi and Qi Yue walked hand in hand towards Grandma Shen.
Just shaking hands was already uncomfortable for Qi Yue, let alone holding hands. He moved his fingers, wanting to signal Shen Kuozhi to let go.
But such a gesture didn’t make Shen Kuozhi release his hand; on the contrary, he held it even tighter.
Qi Yue glanced at Shen Kuozhi and met his domineering gaze that seemed to want to devour him.
But Shen Kuozhi’s backhand hooked Qi Yue’s, and when Qi Yue turned his head back, he saw Meng Jiang looking at them in the living room.
Only then did Qi Yue realize that Shen Kuozhi was setting up a scenario.
And his character was going to be the rebellious innocent.
So he gained some confidence, exerting more force, and when Shen Kuozhi wasn’t paying attention, he managed to break free.
But before he could feel comfortable, Shen Kuozhi’s hand reached out again, and he even leaned in to say something to him.
“This time, you don’t need to break free. Grandma is watching.”
“Cough, cough, Grandma, I’m going back to my room first.”
Shen Mengyu cleared her throat and linked arms with Grandma Shen, coquettishly saying before heading upstairs.
The whole family didn’t stay together for long before each went back to their rooms to sleep.
Qi Yue’s room was arranged next to Shen Kuozhi’s. Although they were only separated by a wall, after returning to their rooms, they only communicated through their phones without any further crossing of boundaries.
[Shen Kuozhi: You worked hard today.]
[Shen Kuozhi: Rest early tonight.]
[Shen Kuozhi: If you like my study, I’ll take you there to pick out books in the future.]
[Qi Yue: I won’t hesitate then.]
[Shen Kuozhi: Well, no need to be polite with me.]
[Shen Kuozhi: Goodnight.]
[Qi Yue: Goodnight.]
