A child who looks like me - Ch183
Jeong-oh picked up the discarded clothes and put them back on.
It was annoying, but there was no other choice. On her way to grab the new shampoo from the utility room, Jiheon was there. Knowing that he wouldn’t just stay still if she wandered around without clothes, she couldn’t even ask him to bring her the shampoo.
As she opened the bathroom door and moved quickly, she ran into Jiheon. His gaze seemed intense, but Jeong-oh ignored it and rushed past him.
Fortunately, he didn’t try to stop her.
“Phew.”
A sigh of relief escaped Jeong-oh’s lips as she returned to the bathroom. She didn’t understand why she felt this way. They were a couple, and at times, she could have made him flustered. So why did she still feel tense around him? Why this sense of relief?
After washing up, Jeong-oh dried her hair, got dressed, and headed to the living room.
“Is Ye-jun still not awake?”
“Yeah.”
Jiheon, answering Jeong-oh’s question, narrowed his eyes and looked at her sharply. Wondering what the problem was, Jeong-oh spoke again.
“What’s wrong?”
With a displeased expression, Jiheon poked a finger through a hole in Jeong-oh’s shoulder area of her shirt.
“Your clothes are too revealing.”
Jeong-oh’s eyes narrowed at Jiheon’s comment.
It wasn’t even off-the-shoulder; it was just a small hole as a design detail on her shoulder—no bigger than 15 cm in diameter.
“How is this revealing? Did you just step out of the Joseon Dynasty?”
“You can see skin that wasn’t visible before.”
“Whether you see it or not, no one else is looking but you, you idiot.”
A jolt.
Suddenly, Jiheon’s expression changed. Jeong-oh belatedly bit her lips to hide her smile, but it was no use. With a faint, seductive smile, Jiheon stepped closer, intertwining his fingers with hers to push her hands away and covered her lips with his.
In the confusion of not knowing what had gone wrong at that moment, Jeong-oh felt Jiheon’s warm breath invade her.
Why did I go through the trouble of picking up clothes in the bathroom? Jeong-oh regretted it for a moment.
.*. *. *. *. *. *.
Jiheon and Jeong-oh took Ye-jun to the pediatrician. It was the day for Ye-jun’s vaccinations.
The pediatrician, seeing many babies of the same age, was impressed by Ye-jun’s remarkable growth.
“Wow, this baby is big! He must be in the top 10% for his age.”
“Yeah, he was born big—4 kg right from the start.”
“Oh my, you must have had a hard time, Mom.”
As Jiheon listened to the conversation between the doctor and Jeong-oh, he became solemn. He realized he needed to pay more attention to parenting, but then the needle approached. Reflexively, he tightened his grip on the baby and huddled his shoulders.
“Anyone would think the dad is the one getting the shot,” the doctor teased Jiheon, who straightened his shoulders in response. However, he flinched when the needle pierced the baby’s skin, as if it had gone into his own.
Waaaaah!
Ye-jun, wide-eyed in the new environment, burst into tears and squirmed.
“Where did he get such a loud voice from?”
The experienced doctor chuckled as he put a band-aid on the baby’s arm.
“You can take the band-aid off in 30 minutes. No baths today, as there might be a slight fever, but if it gets serious, come back in.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
As they left the examination room, Jeong-oh secretly smiled at Jiheon, who was trying to soothe the crying baby while bowing politely to the nurse.
He clearly looked like a first-time dad, but he had insisted on taking them to the hospital today.
Still, it was comfortable and reassuring to be with her husband. Jiheon tended to take on all the difficult tasks when they were together, so today, Jeong-oh didn’t have to lift a finger.
After finally calming Ye-jun down and securing him in the car seat, Jeong-oh turned to Jiheon, who was wiping the sweat off his forehead.
“Was it two years ago or three years ago? I took Ye-na for her flu shot.”
As Jiheon was about to start the engine, he turned to look at Jeong-oh.
“When the kids went into the exam room, they all came out crying, and of course, Ye-na was scared. I had to convince her that it was necessary, telling her that I’d get the shot too, so we should go in together.”
This was a story about a precious memory he didn’t know about.
“Here’s the problem. Should the mom get the shot first, or should the kid?”
“The mom should go first so she can set an example, right?”
“No. If the mom goes first and the kid is squirming, she won’t be able to hold onto them properly. The kid should go first.”
But that answer was based on the mother’s perspective. If it were Jiheon, he could have gotten the shot first and still easily held onto the baby.
Thinking his wife would dispute his answer, Jiheon simply nodded quietly.
“Anyway, Ye-na went first. Overwhelmed with fear, she naturally cried. While trying to comfort her, I said, ‘Ye-na, you shouldn’t cry like that. Look at mommy. Mommy isn’t hurt. Mommy isn’t crying.’ I tried to set a good example for her. But do you know what Ye-na said as she clung to me?”
“…….”
“Mom! No! Don’t get the shot! It really hurts! Mommy, don’t get the shot!”
She remembered the heartfelt moment from that day. It was a love that she hadn’t explicitly taught her child, yet somehow the child had come to understand love. And so, the child had brought happiness to her mother.
She hadn’t shared everything about this lovely child with her husband. While she told him about precious memories as they came to mind, most of her memories with the child were so ordinary that they inevitably faded over time.
Jiheon also seemed a bit disappointed, his eyes shining with excitement as he listened, only to pout afterward.
“Why are you only telling me this now? You should have shared such important stories right from the start.”
“I’m only remembering it now, so I’m sharing it now.”
“Don’t you remember enough?”
“Jiheon, if you pout over things like this, I won’t share these stories with you in the future.”
“Since precious memories have come back, I think we should have a celebration party, honey.”
As Jeong-oh became firm in her stance, Jiheon quickly changed his attitude, which made Jeong-oh stifle a laugh.
Time, memories, and even we ourselves keep flowing, and while it’s inevitable to let go of everyday memories, Jiheon, now you too will begin to build your own special memories.
“Please drop me off over there. I’ll take my time pushing the stroller.”
“Why? I’ll take you home.”
“No, you need to get back to work quickly.”
“Do you want to rush me out of the house that badly?”
“You have a lot to do.”
He didn’t respond to the inconvenient truth.
He went flying yoga with Ye-na once a week, assisted Guksun, and when spending time with family, he was so diligent and passionate, but still had complaints about work.
Jeong-oh had taken a leave of absence, which made it even more so. He didn’t want to go to work because he had nothing to keep him there.
However, Jiheon’s abilities and drive continued to receive good reviews. Not long ago, he established a content production subsidiary under Max Planning. He hired video creators with growth potential to create promotional content for clients’ products.
In an era where TV ratings had dropped compared to before and interactive media were gaining prominence, Jiheon’s strategy had paid off.
Storytelling content that broke free from the limits of 15-second and 30-second formats had garnered much love from the public. Just a month after starting the new business, orders from clients who appreciated the company began to pour in.
In truth, this was largely due to the influence of Lee Guksun. Jiheon had drawn inspiration for his business from Guksun, who had become a popular creator with 10,000 subscribers, so Jeong-oh couldn’t press her husband too hard. The home was a source of rest, energy, and inspiration for him.
Eventually, Jeong-oh gave in to her husband’s stubborn insistence that he had nothing to do until his afternoon meeting.
But when they got home, Jiheon called out urgently while watching Ye-jun as Jeong-oh was changing clothes.
“Honey! Honey!”
“What! What!”
Jeong-oh rushed over, thinking something serious had happened, hastily putting on her clothes.
“What’s going on?!”
“Ye-jun flipped over!”
“…….”
“I’m serious!”
“Oh, really?”
“Want me to show you again?”
“I’ll change and come back to see.”
Jeong-oh had been thinking for days that Ye-jun would soon flip over, so she wasn’t particularly surprised. Instead, she found Jiheon’s reaction amusing.
I felt the same way back then. I didn’t know.
“It’s just the beginning, Oppa.”
“Hmm?”
“Flipping over is just the start.”
“What’s the start?”
“You’ll understand once you experience it.”
Jeong-oh chuckled and turned away.
Jiheon realized the meaning behind Jeong-oh’s words less than an hour later.
“Ye-jun! Ye-jun! Jeong Ye-jun!”
At Jiheon’s shout, Jeong-oh, who had been dozing on the sofa, rushed over again.
“What! What’s wrong? Why! Why!”
“Hey! You little rascal! Didn’t I tell you to stay still?!”
Jeong-oh’s eyes clouded over at Jiheon’s angry voice as he held onto Ye-jun. The baby’s forehead turned red like a salmon fillet, as if pleading, “Dad, don’t be angry. I look just like you.”
“Are you disciplining a baby who isn’t even a year old?”
“No, he’s trying to flip over while I’m changing his diaper.”
Jeong-oh chuckled as she approached and grabbed Ye-jun’s arms. With his limbs flailing, Ye-jun burst into tears as he felt restrained. Jeong-oh changed her expression to get Ye-jun’s attention, and with her help, Jiheon was able to change the diaper without issue.
“Was Ye-na like this too?”
“Everyone is.”
“…….”
“Raising a child isn’t all about happiness, you know.”
“…….”
“Once they start to pull themselves up, you have to immediately clear away anything dangerous in the house, and you have to watch to make sure they don’t put strange things in their mouths.”
“Can’t you just use a walker?”
“That’s only temporary. Kids are so crafty. They’ll quickly get out of the walker and try to crawl somewhere upside down.”
Imagining Ye-jun getting stuck somewhere after escaping the walker left Jiheon’s expression dazed.
“Don’t worry. They’re still cute. You don’t know how beautiful they are.”
Jeong-oh comforted Jiheon like that.
No, it wasn’t comfort.
Jeong-oh knew that no matter what trouble the kids caused, Jiheon would only feel happiness. Just as he had for the past year or so they had been together.
“It’s been almost a year since you regained your memory, Oppa.”
Before long, his birthday was approaching. Jiheon nodded as he counted the days.
“What have you realized during the seven years you lost your memory?”
“Life without desire is boring.”
The answer shot out without a second of hesitation.
The affectionate and gentle gaze he had directed at the baby briefly turned sultry when it landed on her, sending a chill down her spine.
…Can’t be helped.
But it was so like Jeong Jiheon.
It wasn’t the heartfelt answer she had hoped for, but Jeong-oh couldn’t help but laugh.
It was because of this unchanging man that she had fallen so deeply for him.
It was because of him that she had been found once again.
Even in the moments he couldn’t see, he had always lived in her mind.
The one who would always be by her side from now on. The one she would live with.
If there is an afterlife, she felt certain he would find her again in that life too.
Jeong-oh tightly wrapped her arms around her husband’s waist.
End of the Side Story.
